I have a dev server at home where I build all my websites before putting them live or onto my UAT server. On my main OS (Win7) all I have to type in the browser is http://saturn/<site-name>

Saturn is the name of my server.

I have VMware player installed with Windows XP professional running.. It doesn't know "saturn" is my dev server and the browser goes to saturn.com.

I edited the host file on XP and added saturn 192.168.0.5 but still doesn't work.

How do I get win xp pro working the same way as win 7? eg, type in http://saturn/<site-name> and it loads the site.

Glenn

Paul, is it in the same Domain/Workgroup as the server?

Yep. Its weird as when I run vista through VMware player, it knows saturn is my dev server! Just XP playing up.

I have no idea how networks work in VM's so this maybe a stupid question..

Shouldn't the gateway and IP address range be the same in the XP VM as my main computer?

My gateway is 192.168.0.1 on the XP VM its 192.168.213.2 (still can access the internet but no local stuff like NAS drive or server)

Fixed!

Was me being silly again! I had the entry in the host file around the wrong way.

I had saturn 192.168.0.5 when it should of been 192.168.0.5 saturn

Opps  :red:

:wall:

;D

That's what the excitement of 2000 posts does to a man, Paul. ;)

With regard the network adaptor on the VM I use "bridged mode" in Virtualbox and it seems to give me normal Lan access
