Sandisk Cruzer

I picked a 16 Gb Sandisk Cruzer up a couple of moths ago from a well known supermarket beginning with "T", which worked fine for about a week. Of course, I threw the receipt away.

Now, here's the problem, it will no longer mount in Win 7, though I have tonight discovered a way to mount it using the disk management console (and no - it isn't a drive letter conflict). I've been exvchanging emails with SanDisk support, but with their scripts it's like pulling teeth, very slowly and painfully to maximise discomfort.

Anyway, to mount it I go to disk management, right click and choose properties, then using the policies tab I change from, or to quick removal, and it mounts. Windows re-mounts it and assigns a drive letter, but hell - this is a PITA.

Does anyone have one of these with the same problem cured on Win 7 64 (I suspect a firmware conflict with the OS, but then I'm just a user - I don't have the "benefit" of the script).

I really struggled with their last email asking what make and model my PC is. Ermm, I built it 6 years ago and it's evolved beyond all recognition since (I'm pretty sure there isn't a part from the original build left) - so how the hell do I answer that one?

When you plug it in or for that matter unplug it, does anything happen at all e.g. is there any HD activity? Also if you drop a CD/DVD in the drive does that get seen? I'm just wondering if the autorun facility has been turned off some how.

As to giving a name to your PC all they should need to know is the O.S. version and possibly your motherboard manufacturer which you can get from start up by booting into the BIOS. Does the device work on another PC and have you checked another device in the USB port?

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Autorun is turned off (deliberately), but nevertheless, the drive is mounted on insertion and then immediately dismounted until I follow the above procedure.

As to the MB, I don't need to check the BIOS, since I built this with carefully selected parts, I know exactly what components are in the machine

I thought that device came with Launchpad although I could be wrong as I'm not that familiar with it. I am fairly sure that similar devices won't work unless autorun is turned on unless you remove the Launchpad software with a removal tool. Perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree completely, it has been known

I've got 2 of these drives working on Window 7 64 bit with no problem, Steve. Has your drive got the U3 Launchpad software installed on it? because I had problems with this when I switched to Win 7 in that the version I had wasn't useable with this version of Windows so I had to remove it from the drive.

Looking at the U3 web site there seems to be a newer version now available that is supposed to work with Windows 7.

It could possibly be a faulty drive, have you tried it on another PC running the same OS to see if you get the same problem?

Hi,

Does this drive have U3 (the thing that lets you carry apps and stuff on it) installed? If you don't use U3 it might be worth running the removal utility (I probably have a copy if you can't find it) as this will replace the drive firmware with one that makes it into a normal flash drive and doesn't try to mount the U3 "virtual CD" on insertion.

OK - I've removed U3 and tried in an XP machine (secretly - at work). The 32 bit XP system sees and mounts the drive no problem, but my Win 7 64 at home doesn't (it mounts for a few seconds, and then drops off). Since I've ruled out a hardware fault (drive tested and working, and my cheapo USB drive mounts no problem in the same USB slot) I'm guessing a software issue. At least I have a place to start now. I'll post back with results.

If you unplug another usb device attached to same machine is it then mounted ok.
