Download 100 meg when computer is off overnight ????

I have just had a look at my stats for my first 24 hours on idnet and it seems that I managed to download  105MB overnight, when the PC was turned off, very interesting, I suppose my router has a bit of a life of its own over night and is receiving some data, presumably from China or some such other potential intruders, the router seems to be locked down as far as I can,maybe I should turn off udp as well , Its only 105mb but it is a little irritating  ???

Now I think a bit more about it I checked my email about 7am, but I didn't get 100mb of email :)Im not that worried, but Ill keep an eye on it I've tightened up the blacklisting on the firewall to prevent a certain level of pings per second, so that should cut it down a bit. The security log was quite busy over night with lots of Chinese ips trying to connect to me :no: you hackers you  >:(

Yep wireless is secure and I have it logged  :thumb: no traffic on the wifi.

I will keep an eye on it, its very interesting!

I got a shock just now when I went to check my usage figures. Yesterday I appear to have consumed nearly 9GB of bandwidth. What is odd is my daughter was moaning at some point in the evening that she couldn't connect to the Internet and when I tried on my PC it wouldn't let me connect either. The router however gave no indication of a problem and this morning everything is fine.

I spent all of yesterday fiddling with my Windows 7 installation and I did at some point get notification of around 20 MS Updates coming my way. I highly doubt that would account for even 1GB of data. Seems to me something was running in the background and consuming so much bandwidth that it locked us both out but what? I've just scanned both PCs and there's nothing malicious to be found  :dunno:

If it happens again I certainly will. I've had this happen once or twice in the past and on one occasion it took me 30-40 GB over my allowance. It's very, very strange!

During that time I was trying to get a few gadgets and some hardware working with Windows 7. I was continually rebooting my PC. It was also during that time neither myself or my daughter could connect to anywhere on the net so we gave up and did what any sensible people deprived of the Internet would do and went to bed early  ;D

I have problems with the wireless side of the Netgear routers (3 of them) I have. Out of the blue they stop working and the only way to get them up and running again is to power them down for a considerable amount of time. I've just remembered I actually swapped routers (quicker than waiting for them to discharge and reset) a few days ago. As far as I can see with a quick glance the security settings are set the same as the other one but I need to check that out properly. My guess is you are right Rik, someone was stealing my bandwidth. Thanks for the info  :thumb:

Hi John,

Assuming you're running Windows, have you run MalwareBytes Antimalware and a decent, current anti-virus on all your machines to make sure you haven't got a virus or spambot running and chewing up your bandwidth?
