Having the same problem over here. Done a speed test at http://www.top10-broadband.co.uk as one of the only sites that doesnt require me to download extra java components. Got 0.1 Mb down and 0.3 Mb up on a line that normally gives me 180kbps (1.5 Mb I think). On a stable download from steam I'm getting 20kbps max download.

Its been incredibly slow for a few days, but apparently was fixed for a period last night  ???

On a ping to google or youtube i get 0% packet loss and 30 - 40 ping which sounds normal

You need to do a BT speed test, as that's the only evidence they will accept. It will also reveal your profile. Meantime, if you can post your router's stats, we'll be able to have a think about possible problems for you.

Welcome to the forum. :welc: :karma:

I can't do a BT speedtest as I use google chrome which isn't supported. I have firefox installed but that wants me to install the latest java, which is quite a hefty download. I'm going to try it again with all three browsers see if any of them work (got iexplorer somewhere)

Looks like Internet Explorer has the relevant gubbins installed BRB

Right then, weird stuff abound, results:

Download speedachieved during the test was - 99 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :1920 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps

youtube is still very slow, videos load about 1 minutes worth in 5 mins
then started downloading from steam which is normally very reliable and its coming dfown at 15 kbps again ???

Rik

You really have to be able to present BT speedtest evidence to IDNet before they can get BT to look at an issue.

Post edited with results, is there something I'm missing with the numbers. Can't understand why a BT speedtest would be so much than another, especially with the internet being so slow generally.

That tells us that BT won't entertain a fault report, your line is above their 50k minimum acceptable speed. It also tells us that your profile is currently lower than it should be, as you have had a sync speed below 287k at some point in the past few days, hence the profile.

Tell me a bit about your phone wiring. Do you have multiple extension sockets, if so, are they hard wired or flying lead? What else is connected to the line, eg phone, Sky box etc? Where is your router relative to the master socket? Do you have an NTE5 master, the type where the bottom portion of the faceplate can be removed? What router are you using?

:welc: :karma: As Rik said you've had a low rate sync which has dropped your profile, hopefully if  its caused by some interference inside your house you should be able to eliminate it. Unfortunately is does take several days sometimes for the IP profile to recover providing you have no more dropped connections.

Have a single extension about 10m upstairs to the router, the router then has a 15m odd CAT5 to my computer. There is one phone plugged in at the same spot as the router. Don't think we have a master socket. Using a Draytek Vigor 2820n.

The problem started yesterday or the day before when I noticed some terrible lag in game, yet pings were stable at 30 odd, latency spiked to more than a second.

The LAN network has been the same for quite a few months, so don't think its something this end.

What is low rate sync?

Steve

Low rate sync = you've had a download sync at some point according to Rik's calculation below 287k, thats was when your profile dropped. It might not happen again :fingers: but if it does it again in the next few days your profile will never get chance to recover.

I've had IDNet take a look at your line. It seems like there was a resync at 16:00 on March 16, which caused the low profile. You had a resync at 11:00 today which recovered your speed and the profile should follow quite soon. Meanwhile, they are going to ask BT to reset your target noise margin, which will speed the process, but while result in a resync (and possibly more than one if noise is the problem).

The profile should be higher, that is why it is slow. That rate is where the DSLAM drops you to if your router/connection has been turned on and off too frequently.

Everyone has a master socket, it's just finding it that can be difficult. ;) Unscrew the faceplate of the socket where the router is and see if there's a wire connected to terminal 3 (often orange). If there is, remove it - you only need two wires connected, on terminals 2 & 5, and they should be a pair, eg blue/white & white/blue. If you do find a wire on terminal 3, check the other socket and remove it there as well if it's connected.

Fantastic, sounds good. I'm pretty sure I didn't reset the router three days ago... damn things. I reset it today to see if it would fix the problem :P. Thanks very much for all the help.

Rik

It did from what I could learn. There must have been a bad burst of electrical noise on the 16th, which both caused the original disconnection, then forced a slow speed on reconnection.

Problem fixed. Downloading from steam at 300kbps. Fastest download I have ever had off of this connection. Thank you all
