I'm not sure but it's got some loss showing at present.

Here's a grab of a test I was making earlier.

See what I mean? I've seen much higher number in the last few days too.

I'm not completely sure what to make of it, how much loss % is actually OK? ???

Rik

I'm not seeing any loss here, but I do have interleaving on.

OK, I must have asked it wrong, let's try another way;

Is the 10% packet loss shown really acceptable/useful/helpful?

OK, no packet loss would be great and the last one in the list shows that it can be done, but where must you draw the line? I know the 70% I saw the other day was quite probably way beyond acceptable, but where does 10% packet loss fit in the grander scheme of things?

Never had very much of it to even have to consider it before.

Rik

Short answer, no packet loss is ideal. Long answer, I don't know what level is 'acceptable'. I have found, in the past, that having RWIN set too large has induced packet loss, so it might be worth experimenting with that value.

For the rest, I'd suggest a call to the experts in support if no-one has a better answer. If you do call, could you report back, as it's something I would be interested to know the answer to.

If you are receiving constant packet loss (be it at 10% or 90%) you should probably contact support. I've seen a few connections that give the odd loss over a fair amount of ICMP echos, but if you are receiving pretty constant loss doing a standard ping command, then it's something you might want to raise an issue with.

Looking at my L8NC graph for last night, i also see some "blotchs" of packetloss (which arnt there during the day, this is only in the evening) / spikes of packetloss - aswell as pings for that matter (only occasionally) - strange!

FYI im no longer on max, im on a very stable 1mb fixed line :)

Rik

Even a fixed-rate line is going to be susceptible to increased noise, exchange congestion etc in the evenings. I'd suggest a call to support, if there is a problem, the more information that they have, the better placed they are to 'find and fix'.

"increased noise, exchange congestion etc in the evenings"

It was the same on max tho :/

It would also need some sort of miricle for my exchange to become congested, i dont think theres even enough people to fill it!

"I'd suggest a call to support, if there is a problem"

Nah, it doesnt bother me in the slightest! - im just pointing out that captinslow isnt the only one seeing "something similar" ;)

Rik

Hi Avenger

Lucky you, an exchange all to yourself. :)

Even if there's no congestion at your exchange, there may be on BT's network. I appreciate that the issue isn't bothering you, but if there is a problem, the more data IDNet have, the easier it will be for them to track it down, so I would urge you to forward your findings to them. I would do the same, only I'm not seeing the issue (unusual for me!! ;)).

Good point rik ;)- I'll have a look later, run a few tests - i dont trust my l8nc graph to go on it alone!

Note: this has just reminded me of something. Can anyone trace and ping multiplay.co.uk ?? - i think i get Major packetloss to their network, which IS a problem :)(Major means around 20% or more)

Rik

Does this help (interleaving is on):

Rik

You mean you don't roll out a long drum of cable behind you wherever you go? :)

Well, I had already contacted support, and I'd not really got a solution as to what was going on. It seemed to fall in to "just one of those things" mostly because I didn't really understand enough to get anything out of the answer.

This left me with the choice of, asking you guys a bit more about it, in the hope I might find out what was going on, or not asking anyone any further!  :)

As this thread proves I made the right choice by luck as people here help each other out!

Since reading some of the replies it has made what support said take on some new meaning, and while I'd not claim to be an expert in it, I've perhaps got more idea of what is happening now.

I'd call that progress!  ;)

Rik

Trust me, if anything I posted made the situation clearer, it has to have been a fluke. :)

I cant even understand what i posted!!

Rik

I know just how you feel, mate. :)

However, if we have shed any light on the Cap's problem, the forum is working the way we want. Now, all we need is for someone near Evesham to wander down to the company and... Sorry, going OT  8)

We're having problems with redbus at the moment (so Johny says- my new glasses will be bought on Sunday).

We're both having problems connecting to MSN Messenger, but everything else seems to be ok (including Yahoo IM and AIM). Might be completely unrelated, but the redbus error was mentioned.

I am also unable to log onto MSN messenger, which is a first for me!
