It took the cautious approach both machines backed up and the HDDs cloned. All file permissions verified and disks checked,1 HDD had an error, on a Mac you can boot the OS from a usb drive containing a clone of the OS (which needed to be done as you cannot run the disk repair utility on the drive its trying to repair) 10.6.3 then installed on both machines without any apparent problems.

Easier to boot from the install CD and Utilities => Disk Utility on the menu bar  :P

I think its a quicker boot via the usb clone than the install disk

That's a shame, what did they manage to break?

Just done the 10.6.3 update on the MacBook Pro and the 10.5 security patch on the G5.  No probs so far, although everything seems dog slow this morning.

Steve

Slow, is that the computers or internet?

Internet seemed slow.  I imagine there was a lot of pressure on Apple's update servers but it seemed pretty general.

It took a while before this post made it through....

Rik

We see patches where the forum slows down due to activity on the other sites hosted on the server, Tac.

Does seem to be better now than it was earlier.

Rik

I most commonly see them around 12:30, then 18:00-18:30 and finally around 06:00 when the backups run (I'm pleased to say I rarely see that one ;D).

Presumably as it's first kicking off, then - I suppose it creates an index of the files it needs to backup, so blocks access while it takes a snapshot. Well, it sounds plausible to me.  ;D

I think it maybe something like that.

The screen and the LCD, tbh I'm not to sad the thing is just to big at least I still have my 21.5" I may just keep that after this mess and ask for some compensation, at least I know my one works.  :(

Simon

That's a shame, Gary.  I know how you were looking forward to the new one.  :(

I was UPS really mucked it up, and Apple said they could replace the screen and glass front, but I'm not happy with that option, also when it was on my desk it was TOO big, you need a large room for a 27" screen and a very large desk, I prefer my 21.5 size wise, so maybe no bad thing, they are sending me a fee copy of OSX 10.6 which I will sell and Aperture 3 as a freebee instead, cant complain at that and I still have three years on my current Mac's warranty , maybe its for the best in some odd way. Justina said I was being picky over this tint as she could not see it herself, so maybe I am better off in the long term, better the devil you know   :)

There appears to be some reported (and tested) regressions in 10.6.3, specifically related to OpenGL applications (between 10% and 40% decrease in throughput). If you're not running anything 3D intensive, you're probably best still to upgrade.

It looks like on the same machine the higher the resolution the faster you go ,which is definitely odd.
