Usage

Morning all!

I joined IDnet on the 18th of december, payment wise anyway (migration sometime after that...) - Question is, when is the usage reset? - Its not a problem, only up to 5Gb, which for me is "bigger" to what i usually use

Usage runs on the calendar month, Avenger, and is separate from billing - something I always fins slightly odd. For me, it's not a big issue, as my billing date is the 2nd, but if you have a billing date of the 15th, say, it makes tracking usage quite difficult.

Ive recently become a little concerned over my usage, although still relativly small - its larger than it ever used to be! - Im not sure wether this is because ive "come back" to using my PC for "online gaming" activites or not! - Kerio has the facility which tells you whats running and how much bandwidth it's using, nothing unusual there... (assumes that the game's are supposed to take up 10kb/s down or up!) - so must be one the the two other PC's on my network that use the extra and cause "spikes" of latency :/ - Problem is, i cant get on either of them to check!

For what there used for, i can almost certanally say they have some nastys on, without looking!
*hopes the LAN doesent tranmist anything*

That sounds an uncomfortable network to me, Avenger. Are the other machines not yours?

Nope - "familys"! - It's my sister's machine that im concerned over, i checked it a while back and found "all sorts" of nastys, no doubt i will again, if i can check it!

Who controls the router and pay for the ADSL? If it's you, I would make it a condition of access that the machine is kept 'clean' and that you have the right to check.

Unfortunatly, ive already tried that several times, it keeps things "clean" for several days, then i get the usual "My computers gone wrong again..." after that!

Id of thought so to, but its usually *very* difficult to get within eye-sight

Anyhow, ive been considering turning off the LAN to LAN access for a while now, for security reasons so that my "pristine" PC stays that way!

Is there anypoint in doing so? (i.e. is it secure with LAN to LAN allowed, NAT on, no ports etc etc)..or not so!

I'm not sure what you're trying to achieve, Avenger. Do you want your sister to have 'net access but no access to your machine, or vice versa. Personally, I'd just bar her MAC from accessing the router.

I think ive succeded in the *almost* impossible, confusing myself with my own post!

Erm, what i mean is, IF my sister's pc is back in its "infected" state, would any of the offending files be malicous enough to be able to send themselves via the LAN (not WAN) - to other PC's on the network?

Potentially yes, which is why I would unplug her from the router until she gets her act together - either disconnect her cabled connection, or bar her MAC from connecting (which may be a case of allowing others, if you see what I mean).

At the very least, you need a good software firewall on your machine, NOD will look after much of the rest, and scan for spyware frequently. Personally, though, I'd take the 'clean up or no internet' route.

2/3 covered atleast! - Havnt installed Spyware doctor yet!

EDIT: ooh, didnt notice SD 5 was now out...may install it later, so 3/3!

I think what ill do is sneak a "check" in this afternoon, im back before anyone else today! - I just hope it isnt to bad, i *was* looking forward to a relax!

Sounds like a plan. Do an ipconfig /all while you're there and note her MAC, just in case you need it.

Hmf, just checked it using Zone Alarm security suite...found next to nothing *Suprised*

Im going to lock the LAN to LAN though, for future "peace of mind"

Might be worth doing an online scan, Avenger - see here, but I'd definitely lock her out of your own machine.

Ive just ballsed up on the LAN to LAN thing anyway...only Idnetters works :S - even the routers blocking "itself"!!

Its a ZyXel 660H - its fixed now, couple of resets did the trick

Going to leave it, to my suprise all these PC's are clean - or near enough, plus i dont wanna lock myself out again!
