I seem to be not able to get on the net with IDNet yet again.

Is it thought that this going to be intermittent like this for very much longer?

Never sure when it's OK to use since joining. Having to rely on old ISP, which is a bit ridiculous. I really do not want to whinge, but its not acceptable as it is.

jimc

yep I lost connection for 30min from around 14:00 until 14:30

There's two people posting problems in ThinkBroadband, four, including Cav, with no problems. I've just had a word with Miriam, and they're not aware of any major issues at present, though she will either get back to me or post here if something becomes apparent.

I can only advise, therefore, calling support if you are affected, to let them know. Please do re-boot your router first though, just in case it's a stale session issue.

My girlfriend phoned me to compain that the internet wsn't working, even after rebooting the router. From work I tried to ping the router but got no response. She had been using it fine earlier in the day, so can only assume something happened at IDNet/BTs end. So to contradict Cavillas, there are problems in essex!!!

So whatever is happening, it's not geographical. I'd definitely suggest calling it in. It's always nice to have a natter with Miriam anyway. :)

Will that become Frinton in Sea sometime soon?

Hope not.  But they do now have a chippie and pub Oh and a betting shop.  But still no Ice Cream vendor on the beach.  Walton is much friendlier and has everything you could want, plus we ain't snobbish. ;D

The east coast must be worrying at times, having seen so much of it disappear... :(

You can't get rid of me that quick. ;D  Serously though,Most of the coastal erosion around this way has been up along the Naze cliffs, where the Tower is.  There is a Naze protection society which has  managed to get some funding and will soon get more for necessary defences.  Definately not worth worrying about the coast round this way for at least 50 years. ::)

If I'm around in 50 years, I suspect the coast will be the last thing I'll be worried about. :)

I got disconnected (and couldn't reconnect) last Friday afternoon starting about 16:15, isn't that always the way. Thought it may be a "stale session" but decided to call support anyway. Support agreed that it looked like a stale session as they could see me synced to the exchange but not authenticated with idnet.

With a "Stale Session" the only real remedy is to switch off the router for 30 mins or so then boot back up. Actually I disconnected the adsl cable too just for good measure. This sorted my problem out.

Sometimes, logging in to the BT test domain can have the same effect, Rob, without the wait, or so Maxping swears, see the sticky here.

Ahh, I thought that was just for sorting out the "ping problem". I guess it would be worth a try, although the advice from Support was to switch off for 30 mins. To put it in context I've only had 2 stale sessions in one year of using idnet.

Rob.

Rik

I've never actually had a stale session that a re-boot didn't cure, Rob, so I'm relying on what others have said. Logically, it would make sense that if you logged in elsewhere it would force an end to the stale session, at least I think it does... :)

well its only happend to me a 2 or three times and only in the last month, Today re booting my router sorted it , last time a quick phone call to idnet confirmed they had a problem with a new router their end and the previous time I dont recall ,but think it may have been a router reboot again, its usually not a major problem as I am back on within half an hour at most, but I am keeping an eye on it to see if it starts occuring more regular , as it may indicate  something on its way out.

Could someone explain what is meant by a "Stale Session" and why switching off a router for 30mins is any different to switching it off for a few seconds. I ask this because along with others I have been suffering with the "Idle Timeout Reached" problem on my Speedtouch 585 (see thinkbroadband.com - DSL Hardware Discussion) and wondered if this thread is discussing the same problem.

Rik

Hi Phil

A stale session is when the BT equipment thinks your are still connected to your ISP but, in fact, you are not. The BT equipment maintains the PPP session which is going nowhere, and so you can't re-connect. The reason for the 30 minute power off is to give the line monitoring equipment time to realise you've left, and then it should re-connect you correctly when you power up again. An alternative, which I've never needed to try, is to log in to the BT test domain. That should also force a new PPP session.

Idle timeouts could be caused by stale sessions, but could be down to the remote server or a routing failure. If you can connect to the web at all, you don't have a stale session.

This one was not solved by logging in elsewhere and coming back. Tried that over half an hour later and it was still down, and I could not log in as a result of that. I had to use the old ISP for some time, then forgot to try logging in again with IDNet as I had some chores to do online. Tried much, much later and it was fine

Of course once their 30 day notice period ends I'll be dependent on IDNet to provide an entirely stable/present service the whole time. We'll just have to wait and see what happens at that point. Sure hope it pans out OK, as I rather like it here apart from that bit.

Rik

You may not have 30 days, Cap. You're only getting access to both ISPs till BT remembers to switch on SSB.

Thanks for that Rikbean. I suppose by the fact that my BT Voyager router will always connect when the Speedtouch 585 won't indicates that it is not a "Stale Session" causing the problem. I wonder if CaptainSlow has the Speedtouch modem as Speedtouch support have acknowledged a problem but seem to be slow in providing a solution.

Rik

Hi Phil

If you can connect with the Voyager it's a safe bet there's a hardware problem with the Speedtouch. They are usually quite good at fixing firmware problems though, is there an earlier version you could use in the interim?

Hi Rik
Have tried three different firmware versions with no success but I have just received the new firmware version 6.2.16.3 from Speedtouch support this morning. After installation (twice) an error suggested it had not installed but it is now showing as being installed so will see if that makes any difference.
