speed tests

I know that these are not really very good but how do they work.I can try various ones and get different results.
On   http://www.speedtest.net/index.php I have used the nearest one to me and got  slightly better speeds than one further away but higher pings

They simulate a download to your machine, Baz, by one of several methods - all of which are prone to errors, especially if your AV software is running. I find that the Maidenhead server most closely relates to my results from a BT test, so I always use that one. Pings I ignore completely, the results are too wildly variable. If I want to do a ping test, I'll do it manually.

i do ping tests they vary depends on how long it takes to cook.

DR rump steak tonight, chunky chips. Homemade curry tomorrow, roast heart of rump Monday - the latter two were due to be the other way round, but I'm going to the dentist's Tuesday, and try to avoid 'smelly' foods the night before.

i love homemade chips and get my potatoes straight from the farms around here, along with my veg.

We get 25kg sacks from a farm shop. We seem, for reasons I can't explain, to get through a lot of spuds. Shame they don't count as one of your five a day.
