I thought I'd pulled off a major coup yesterday but a bit of a surprise was waiting in my email this morning.

Received an advance DD collection notice (as I always do) for £17.99 not £15 as I thought so am not best pleased  (its fine if you are a business customer as they can get the VAT back but quoting £15 as a core price and sidestepping HM Treasury's cut to retain my custom gets my back up)

I have mailed CS asking whether this was due to a billing error but if it wasn't I'm getting my MAC and heading over to IDNET next week.

Huh? I'm confused. Are they not two different tarrifs? PAYG is £14.99, Home Basic is £17.99.
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.

You are confused  ;D he is talking about his present ISP ZEN.

Not sure if this also applies to broadband, but for the phone service you can choose the date of the invoice.

It does apply to broadband as well. You just need to ask support to adjust it.

Looks like they did make a billing mistake and are indeed going to charge the price the person quoted to me on the phone but they have also issued a MAC so if I don't see a revised DD notice over the next few days thats always an option.

DorsetBoy

??? So they match the price to tempt you to stay then hand you a MAC code .............. that is an odd way to say we want your custom  ::) ::)

pctech

Theu have main CS then cancellations, I think someone in main CS triggered the MAC but had response from the chap I've been dealing with in cancellations.

That is for them to sort internally but as I say, if its not corrected there is nothing to stop me handing the MAC to IDNET but we shall see what transpires.

I've noted the MAC down and have webmail access to my address so can see whats going on from work.

If you've asked for a MAC to be generated, under broadband switching regulations your provider must provide it within five working days regardless of whether you actually want to move or not :)

Yes as ofcom came down quite hard on the ISPs on that which is no bad thing in my opinion.

I think they need to introduce a MAC for landlines as it would reduce slamming somewhat and you need a PAC to move your mobile number.

Rik

It could be a smart move, with all telecoms services essentially working to the same code of practice.

Just the sort of thing you might want to put in a Digital Economy Bill in fact!

I could well be wrong, I do think you are not making a definite decision here and are being pulled one way or another, it is time for you to jump one way or another and take your  broadband future into your own hands. You have noted the MAC down so put it into the IDNet web site and take it from there, GO FOR IT! Your decision will definitely not be the end of the world as you will only be on a monthly contract.

Just GO FOR IT! This could well be the change you are craving, GO FOR IT! ;) Enter your MAC now!

Let me explain why I'm sticking with Zen

Their normal deal with 5GB allowance is £17.99 a month and the tariff I was on was £24.99 a month.

My average amount of usage is about 4.5 GB but to reach this I really have to hammer iPlayer, Youtube and Digitally Imported as I'm a shift worker and have full net access at work.

They offered me a choice of knocking a fiver off the existing tariff or 3 quid off their lite tariff.

I don't do much surfing in the small hours so it seemed like a good deal whereas I maybe hitting up against IDnet's 4GB peak barrier.

The aim of the exercise is to save myself as much as I can while ensuring I can use the net as I would like.

Should my usage change then I will look at IDnet's tariff with 10GB but for the moment am happy as is.

Rik

Are you on a WBC-enabled exchange?

Great! Enjoy your new deal with Zen, I am sure they are good company as well. ;)

There's about three ISPs I would use, Q. IDNet, Zen and Newnet.

Not heard of Q but used Newnet (nameservers got a bit slow sometimes) and obviously Zen.

I also tried O2/Be (as my mobile is with O2) but found the service to be very unstable due to the long line length.

Simon

'Q' is Rik's address to Quandam.  We tend to shorten names here.  ;)
