I thought my connection was being sluggish lately, but as I haven't been doing much I never bothered checking. I've just looked at my router and my profile has dropped from just under 12000 to 4500! I've rebooted and reset the router and got back to the heady heights of 6000ish.

What the hell happened? My line has never been this slow, and nothing has changed at my end (I've checked too, incase a kitty has eaten a cable :D)

Engineering work at your exchange perhaps?

Maybe they reset the DSLAM or BRAS.

Niall

The only thing I can think of is that, or the fact is poured down during the night after a couple of warm days. Maybe summut got wet on the line outside. No major problem as it always returns to normal within a few days of dropping, but 4000! Christ!

I wish I could get 4 Meg.

Line used to top out at about 1.2 then drop to 750

Been fairly stable since 21CN switchover and is about 1.6.

Niall

My profile seems to be stuck at 6540 and webpages are loading VERY slowly.

I was talking to my sisters other half who had problems a few weeks ago and he said his connection went cr*p at the weekend too, which seems to suggest an exchange issue. I'll give it until the weekend, then I'll email support just incase I've got a stuck profile (he says randomly throwing in something he knows nothing about :D)

Unplug your router from the power for about 30 minutes then plug back in.

Should then sync at max speed.

Niall

Nope, I did that last night. It increased from 4000ish to what it is now. I've already powered down the router before posting this. I'll give it another go though as I've got a couple of things to do for the next few minutes. I quite fancy a cuppa too :D

Sorry was hoping it might reset the hardware at the BT end as it has worked for me like that in some cases.

It will recover but will just take its own time.

Gary

You have had I imagine a large burst of noise on the line Niall, this has knocked your profile down, you want to keep your router on now and not unplug and replug it, this could be seen as further instability on the line and do more harm than good. I am not sure how many days it takes to recover on WBC but its best to leave it now and let it settle so the BT software sees the line as stable now.
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Rik

It would be handy if you could do a BT speed test, Niall, so we can see where your profile is set.

It's sorted itself while I was in work :)

It was 6000 odd when I came in, but a reboot has now given me 10480. Not as good as previously, but that's fine for me :)

No idea what the problem was though.

It sounds like noise on the line, but we'd need to get you to run diagnostics to be sure.

My connection seems very hit or miss tonight. It was back to the profile I mentioned before, but I've just been told that I've been signing in and out of msn all night.

That would actually explain why downloading anything (iplayer, youtube, etc) is buffering. I think something is definitely broken somewhere. Strange considering I've NEVER had any problems with my set up or line, other than exchange problems. I wonder if there's any way of finding out what's going on at the exchange? Probably not knowing that shower at BT.

Well it's stabilised now. I'm currently downloading the latest quicktime and it's coming down at 657Kb/Sec, so the line has reverted back to the profile I had yesterday. Very strange.
