While bringing a friend's notebook back from the dead (Windows reinstall after the install was completely stuffed) I downloaded Avast from their site and noticed it had changed quite a bit from the 4.8 I was running at home.

I decided to upgrade my own install which runs alongside a purchased version of Malwarebytes and ZoneAlarm, the software installed and the engine appeared to run but upon a reboot the service loading process stopped (after loading the desktop) and I could not even invoke Task Manager so had to use the reset.

Booted the system in Safe Mode and removed Avast!, rebooted and system started ok.

Just wondered if anyone else has had a similar issue.

My system config:
Windows XP Pro SP3
Pentium D 3.4 GHz
2GB DDR 2 running at 533 MHz

Services running:
Malwarebytes
Avast!
ZoneAlarm
iTunesHelper plus Apple Mobile Device and iPod services (I use an iPod Nano)

Cant think of others off top of my head (am at work at the minute)

I take it Avast has active shields like Malwarebytes, that can cause troubles, also Zonealarm the paid for version has antispyware from what I remember, these will probably cause conflicts as you have to many applications trying to do the same thing, you want a mixture of on demand and active, when I used a windows box I found Eset, Prevx (paid for) and windows defender running in the background fine, with Malwarebytes and superantispyware as on demand only. I have no experience of Avast but if protection is overlapping that could be the issue. Try turning off Malwarebytes shields and Zonealwarms antispyware and install Avast and see what happens. I think you have to many programs doing the same thing, also Zonealarm is noted for being a bit of a pain tbh.
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Zonealarm is the free one.

I wonder if Alwil (who produce Avast!) hsve rolled some anti-malware scanning into the new version that was not present before as my current config has been ok up to now.

Thanks for the advice.

Have a look on google for conflicts between Avast and Zonealarm and see if any of them help, there are quite a few, but I do not know what version of Zonealarm you are running. Also there are reports of Malwarebytes paid for version conflicting with Avast 5 which may be more the issue.
