Having purchased a new computer I was forced from Windows XP to Windows 7. I have been working on it for a number of hours each day since Sunday, still not working as I would wish. Getting applications to cross over is a headache. Also I got my Canon printer to work but neither their G3 camera or D2400U scanner will work. Canon's web site is a maze. My main problem is SeaMonkey it seems very unstable, some times emails will get put into the junk folders, also News.Eternal-September is very his and miss. Am I alone in this, or do others find Windows 7 a pain in the derriere? One good thing to come out of it I had problems getting Eset on board, the service given was superb, emails answered almost immediately, then as I still could not get it to work theya sked me to telephone, with my permission they took over my computer and solved it rapidly. It turns out it was my error!  :blush:

Mac user so beware found this for the G3

Hi there, so I figured out what was meant by "camera menu" - the menu on the camera itself - duh!

So for the Canon Powershot G3, you press the "Menu" button, and select the second set of menus (orange icon with wrench and hammer, presumably "settings"), scroll down to the very last item which is "Communication". The default is "Normal" and you want to change it to "PTP". As WifiEd says, Windows 7 will now recognize the device and install the drivers and give you options to download the info. A card reader may be faster but it's nice to know you can go direct from the camera. I didn't find it that slow.

There may be a way to use ZoomBrowser EX and Canon Utilities Camera Window. I downloaded the latest versions (ZoomBrowser EX 6.4.1 which supposedly supports Windows Vista 64-bit) and am tried running it. ZoomBrowser recognizes the camera and tries to launch the Camera Window but it freezes. One or both the apps may work in Compatibility Mode but I haven't figured out for sure yet.

Canon says that the Powershot G3 is Windows 7 Compatible, but you think they would give more info on how to make it work!

Simon that is exactly what I did, a number of times, still a bag of worms. I have even input the news reader data by hand, I copied the info off my old machine. It is sitting sadly in the garage with just a screen attached!  :'(

Thanks Steve, I followed the instruction for the came and it seemed to work. However the scanner shows no program for the scanner and Widows 7. I have not had time yet to see if the camera works ok, and I am off now to trip the light fantastic. Will update tomorrow.

There are a number of Canon scanners that will not work with Vista or W7. I had a canon 8000f and ended up upgrading to the 8800f which I must admit is faster and nicer to use. The fault is not Microsoft it's Canon who seem to refuse to keep up so they can sell more products.  ::)

What are your feelings re W7 as we type? I have run it on a Medion Desktop PC (superb by the way) for almost six weeks now and I would say it is OK, no more than that. XP to me has/had everything for the average punter, in fact a dream to use and without serious problems. XP, for me, takes some beating (for the average punter!) :dunno:

Its safer, more robust and has better features Q in the long term a ten year old OS against modern malware? Thats like hitting a wall in a ten year old car its going to hurt, now it will still hurt in a brand new one with 8 airbags but you will probably walk away intact. The modern car will generally be safer more efficient and designed for todays environment, like windows 7.

I agree, Gary, I've been using Windows 7 64bit version since it's release with no problems, and I must say I've found it to be better than XP, easier to use and it boots up and runs faster.

I, too, prefer 7 64bit to XP. I've had no problems with hardware (including an aging Samsung SCX-4216F) and with the exception of one game, all software works well.

Give it some time, there are differences between Win 7 and XP that take a little getting used to, but once you do it's much better. In fact, it's starting to catch up with Ubuntu ;)

WEll I may be ging back to windows next week, Apple say they will refund me, as long as they refund the applce care i can get a i7 2.8Ghz 3XS system with USB3 and Sata 6 mobo and two 1 TB HD's a Creative fatality soundcard and corsair liquid cooling for the cpu and 6 mb corsair ram for £150 more than my iMac! I'm just so disappointed in Apples careless attitude with the machines it has made me want to flee them as soon as possible. Spoke to scan this morning and they can do me a Silverstone fortress case without the silly window as well, they were very helpful. Even though Rik has mentioned Viewsonics bad handling of a product scan have a really great 23" 1080P IPS monitor by them for £243t.
OSX is just so easy to look after though, and the iMac is great but I don't hold out much for Apple build quality, they seem to be more about rushing out numbers rather than quality at this time, the 27" iMac is still a mess as well. In fact the 21.5" I have is about the best of the the bunch bar Mac Pros, and the 21.5" has a few niggling issues. I will miss the LED backlit screen if it all goes ahead though it is glorious.  :(

You've got to go with what you'll be happy with.  Your experience of the Mac is tinged, so your decisioc is understandable, Gary.

Tis a shame I've got three Apple machines now 2 laps and a 24 iMac and not a single hardware issue I think you've been unfortunate but it's worry if cs can't sort the problem out to your satisfaction

Be advised that it is with great regret that I must inform you that we have not and we will not be developing drivers that would allow your two products to be interfaced with a PC on which the 32-bit variant of the Microsoft Windows 7 Operating System is installed. In short, your products are not compatible with your OS. Be advised that the PowerShot G3 can still download the images if you purchase a card reader.

Have Win7 on 3 machines and it works like a dream, I have never been an M$ fan but really can't fault Win7, it really does the job, I could/would never go back to XP again now.

Try the Vista drivers before you do anything else. Many hardware manufacturers decided to have a cut off at Win7. HP do not supply anything for my printer and scanner. M$ provide a basic features driver for the printer but that meant Photosmart was gone along with other things. I went to HP,got the 64bit driver suite for my kit and installed it as is,not with compatibility mode and now have both scanner and printer working perfectly.

My son has stacks of games written for XP , we installed them from disc without any compatibility changes and all but 2 work perfectly, he says they are now running better than on XP.

There are no vista drivers for the scanner I think the suggestion for vista was to use the XP drivers
