trouble is adam, the sync wont stay, brian asked bt today to unband and switch interleaving back on, clearly they've unbanded it, but just not bothered with the interleaving.

I'm now getting the negative numbers on snr. So expect a resync very soon, and rebanding by mornnig.

BT simply cannot organise the preverbial in a brewery

Ah, indeed. I had a negative sync on the Netgear a few times and it could sometimes hold a sync. I was interleaved though. Hopefully it will get sorted soon!

I wonder where that noise is coming from?

For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-8000 Kbps.

Rik

The variations you're seeing are probably just the coming and going of noise.

Thanks Rik, after all the issues just a bit paranoid. had to down the router though as we had a big thuderstorm moving through, that droped 1mb off the speed

Runrouterstats all the time, and keep an eye on the NM. As a storm gets close, that will start to show spikes of noise. As a secondary check, visit:

http://www.isleofwightweather.co.uk/live_storm_data.htm

for a real-time picture of where storms are. If you do power down, and it is an excellent practice if the storm is close, wait at least half an hour before powering up again - the storm can continue to impact your line noise for a while.

Technical Ben

I turned off last night. But left it on this morning. Not affecting me yet, but then I am close to the exchange, and not many posts for the bolts to hit...
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.

More important, Ben, is the difference in earth potential at each end of the line - it's that variation on cloud to ground lightning which does all the damage. Cloud to cloud can upset the signal, but is relatively safe electrically. Get a strike at one end or other of the line and the difference in potential provides a nice big surge of current through the router and, in the worst cases, though the PC.

I had a dial-up modem taken out by a lightning strike over the house.

If you really want to live dangerously get yourself a surge protector with telecom protection.

The one I use (A Belkin) has an unlimited connected equipment warranty so they'll replace anything thats damaged provided it was connected.

Rik

And the SP was connected directly to the mains.
