Is it not the same as IDNet supply?

It is, only £26.11 less expensive.
Ted
There's no place like 127.0.0.1

sobranie

V5 seems OK but the V4 appears to be more stable. router stats would appear to bear this out.

Hi
tried to add a picture but I think its an attachment. It shows my wireless signal. I'm red, the green is my neighbour. I am sitting in the back room but its not that far away. One thing is that I am having to reset the router every day now to get internet access. I have changed the filter but makes no difference. Thats whats making me think I need a new router.

It may be that there's something odd going on with DHCP server. Latest firmware installed?

What happens to make you need to reset the router, Cyprio?

Whats this Steve. Sorry but I'm not that clued up on this sort of thing.

Rik

When I try and go on the net it says  "IPv4 Connectivity - No Network Access". I restart the router and it then says "IPv4 Connectivity - Internet"

I am going to get the new router I mentioned earlier but PC World are out of stock untill the weekend. Just wondered if it was something else.

thanks for taking the time to help

Rik

It does sound a bit like a dying router. Whereabouts are you?

hi
I have my new router in place and so far so good. I'll give it a few days and hopefully it will be sorted. My speed is down to 1931kbps when its been around 3871kbps. Is this because I have a new router and it needs to settle down again?
ta

Rik

It's more likely that your profile has been depressed as the result of the other router. Can you do a BT speed test, please, and cut'n'paste the results?

cyprio42

hi mate
do you think the speed will come back. This new router and wirelsss adaptor I have just got are no where near as stable as my previous router and in built wirelss card. I am thinking of taking it all back to PC world. Takes ages to connect to the net when I first switch the pc on.

Just talking to my neighbour and he said that he had BT out the other week because he'd had a few problems and they said there was a fault on the line and that they had rectified his problem. That just about ties in for when my problems started! I dont think its a hardware fault now with my setup, I reckon its something they have done.

I had a look at the BT speedtest but wasn't sure on stage 3. I'll have another go.

cheers

Simon

Sorry, Rik is away today, but hopefully someone will be able to help you soon.  I can tell you that continued instability will cause your profile to drop, as the BT software will step in to try to stabilise the connection.  Can you move the router to be nearer the wireless adapter?  My cousin had a connection issue with a wireless adapter, and all she did was move the router a few inches and it worked fine.  Might be worth a try.  If you can keep a stable connection, I believe your profile will recover over a few days.

Steve

As Simon says it would be good if you could connect to your router with an ethernet cable instead of wifi and then we know whether you've got a broadband issue  a local wifi issue or both.

hi
this is the result om my BT test. Plugged directly into the  BT faceplate test socket. I have my wireless issues sorted now, just need to get my ADSL2 speeds back to what they were last week.
Thanks for looking into this

That will get you a 1.75M profile, if the line holds steady, but it will take up to five days to adjust as it's a small change.

now gone back to square 1. Put back the old v3 router and got rid of the new v5 Router and wireless Netgear dongle, both on there way back to PC world. They were rubbish, taking ages to connect and losing sync all the time. I think my problem is to do with the cordless phone, because if I lose internet connection and then unplug the phone it comes back. Also if the phone rings it sometimes loses connection. I am going to get a cheap phone and try that. If this fails its onto BT. :fingers:

Rik

Try double filtering the phone, two filters in series, see if that helps.

Two filters, one plugged into the other would be in parallel Rik  :eyebrow: ;D

Sorry Den, I have to side with Rik on this one.

Rik, does this really help with filtering?

Steve

:welcome: :karma: In theory no but I've seen it used on Sky boxes

Thanks guys.

Didn't want to hijack this thread but as you raised the point...

Just joined IDNET from fast4 (reseller of Murphex) and it's awesome. Rock solid speeds and pings so far, plus good support forum.

Rik

Welcome to the forum Agesalter. :welc: :karma:

If filters were 100% efficient, then it would have no effect, but they are not. So, if a filter catches 90% of the ADSL signal (remember that the voice is a straight 'pass through'), then a second one in series would, in theory, mop up another 9%, giving a total of 99% efficiency. I'm not sure it's ever been tested, but I have seen it work, particularly with Sky boxes.

It will be even better after the world cup, IDNet have laid on extra bandwidth, but BT have not, and many areas are seeing local exchange congestion. :(

hi
using 2 filters makes no difference. I have nothing plugged in now only the router into the master socket. This is connected via ethernet. I can only get the internet by switching the router on/off. I am sure its a fault outside of my setup. Could be something to do with me recently going to ADSL2+. Idnet are on the case now.
thanks

Rik

Given you've tried multiple routers and are at the test socket, I don't think there's any else you can do to help yourself, unfortunately. Good luck with BT. :)

Looks like I might have to head back to o2. I know the speed was not good at times but at least  I had a stable connection. I have to reboot the router 2 to 3 times daily to get internet connection and its just to much. I have tried a new router, dongle, filter and phone. Nothing is connected to the phone line apart from the router, we are using the mobile. I have had one reply from idnet saying BT was looking into it. I see no change, in fact it could be worse. Thing is I dont mind ringing BT myself but will they ask about Idnet?

Glenn

Have you tried a quiet line test, dial 17070 and select option 2? All you should hear is a gentle hum in the background.

Yes, if you've tried everything internally, then it does indicate a possible fault on the line, which could well stay with you even if you change ISP.   :-\

Bud

So on IDNET, do you have to buy a new router or modem every five minutes? ???
I'm on a learning curve

Bud

Could it be that cable and dumping BT is the answer?
I'm on a learning curve

Simon

You don't have to buy a router every five minutes, but it's advisable to get one that works well with your line in the first place.

So then...what is best.....Netgear DM111p straight into master BT socket or wirless router?

Steve

I think an adsl router would help ,its always on,you can have multiple wired and wireless connections, a LAN and a NAT firewall

Bud

So what would you recommend?

I have always had an issue with security and wireless and so my main PC is in my studio using my netgear modem and when another user requires access on another machine this is turned off and the other machine accesses the internet via a speedtouch 330 so only one pc at a time is using the connection. Routing cable from my studio to other rooms would not be practical and quite difficult owing to layout. Now that I've been told that my modem must stay on it would seem that wireless is my only option here. And yet, in the manual for my modem it says that the button on the back of the unit is for switching on and off when not in use but the unit is still connected to the mains. (Netgear DM111p)

The DG834G, as mentioned in this thread, suits most people, and can be bought pre-configured from IDNet.

Talk to IDNet first, though, before you spend out again.

This DG834GV5 is available from PC world at £31.60.

Are they difficult to set up and what are the IDNET prices?
I'm on a learning curve

Bud

Wow! just checked IDNET prices :o

I would need 2 wireless network adapters as well and they're only £15 each at pc world....I never understand why businesses don't cut their prices and increase their sales instead of profiteering and losing out.... ???

It's a bit like those bars abroad that rip you off for beer....you only have a pint then they lose you for the rest of the holiday....crazy thinking... ???

Simon

Your choice.  No one is saying you have to buy from IDNet.  Please remember, though, you have been advised to talk to them before you spend out on a new router.

We barely cover our costs on the routers that we sell. Because we can't buy in huge quantities we don't have the buying power of PC World, Amazon etc. But we do ofer a free configuration service which suits people who don't want to have to learn how to setup their hardware.

No need to go wireless though. Just use network cables from the router to each machine.
