Hello there, been a while since I've posted on here!

Been noticing the last few days that my connection seems to be getting more sluggish as the evenings approach. Just did a test on thinkbroadband and got this:

I'm currently synced at 6176/448, albeit with a 4000kbps profile (router recently resynced with a slightly lower target SNR).

I know there appeared to be issues last night - I struggled to get over 0.5mbps at one point :o, but can't appear to find anything to suggest it's IDNet related this time :(. A BT speedtest gave me a result of ~3mbps earlier, though, so I'm a little confused ???!

On another note, has anybody experienced higher than usual pings today? I'm typically used to around 24-25ms to UK-based servers, however according to a latency graph I've got running, sometime in the early hours of this morning the baseline pings jumped up to 34-35ms minimum. I'm not interleaved, either. I do a fair bit of online gaming but it's not a huge cause for concern yet, just curious as to why the minimum has suddenly increased.

Here's a traceroute to idnet.net:

Tracing route to www.idnet.net [212.69.36.10]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1     1 ms     1 ms     1 ms  192.168.0.1
  2    61 ms    46 ms    71 ms  telehouse-gw2-lo1.idnet.net [212.69.63.51]
  3    39 ms    34 ms    36 ms  telehouse-gw3-g0-1-400.idnet.net [212.69.63.243]

  4    41 ms    41 ms    38 ms  redbus-gw2-g0-1-331.idnet.net [212.69.63.5]
  5    43 ms    49 ms    37 ms  redbus-gw1-fa2-0-300.idnet.net [212.69.63.225]
  6    47 ms    37 ms    36 ms  www.idnet.net [212.69.36.10]

Trace complete.

Thanks all :)

Any ideas why your profile's a little low?

Hi Tom,

We had a bit of this last night.  This thread refers:

Hi Simon,

Yes, I had a glance through that thread earlier on, but nobody appears to have any issues tonight with their connection. I'm thinking it's exchange congestion :(.

Yep - lost sync in a thunderstorm we had a couple of nights ago and rebooted the router yesterday. My sync speed jumped back up to 6176 from 4500 ish, so I'm expecting a couple of days before the profile catches up :)

Its the right time of day for exchange congestion, I suggest check with support who can see the exchange spare capacity.

Will give them a ring in the morning Simon :). Didn't realise they were able to check things like that! Hopefully they'll be able to shed some light on the problem.

Rik

Who is this Fred? ;D

It sounds very much like exchange congestion, Tom. Can you get a BT test done in the morning?

Just done a BT test this morning and got the following:

Download speed achieved during the test was - 3724 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :5600 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 4000 Kbps

So certainly seems like exchange congestion at the moment. Need to get a couple more tests done throughout the day and sent them across to support who can then have a look at the VPs and see if there are any issues.

Will let you know in due course :)

The downstream sync is not very stable, have you been though an inside house checklist to eradicate any sources of noise recently i.e filters, bell wire, router cables, sky boxes and DECT phones

Sorry there hasn't been an update lately - been very busy with the night shift at work this last week!

I've conducted a few BT speedtests but due to work commitments I've not been able to run them at peak times, so what results I do have show little or no congestion at all :(.

What I do have, however is a whole range of data from the Samknows Performance Monitoring unit (see here for details), and as a pure example I have attached the web downloads report from Wednesday. As you can see my downstream speeds plummet when the kids arrive back from school around 4pm :(.

As the results from Samknows are conducted from a separate router which only runs tests when the connection is idle, do you think IDNet would be interested in these?

Thanks again :)

My speed has gone boobies up again this afternoon, strange it wasn't too bad yesterday, must be more people watching online today.  :(

I think that the Wednesday afternoon dip was probably due to the Switzerland v Spain match. We've noticed that towards the end of an exciting match, where it looks like there might be a result that wouldn't have been expected, that traffic suges. But only during working hours. Perhaps due to co-workers spreading the word that there's another football 'upset' brewing?

There's no understanding some people, Simon. ;)

There is no sound, so all they can really do is check at the score.
