Profile up, throughput down

Hi

Just a question really as am not going to put this to support as I'm migrating away on Friday but I'd noticed from the router the sync speed had stayed at 1344 for a couple of days but on speedtests I was getting around 979 Kbps or so.

I decided to 'give it a kick' by rebooting and I resynced at 1376 Kbps but throughput has dropped to 926 Kbps.

Normal or odd?

To get a 1.25M profile, Mitch, you need to hit 1.44 or better. You're attenuation is similar to mine, but your noise margin has been pushed up to stabilise your line. What sort of wiring to do have, eg extensions, devices connected?

Filter is plugged directly into the socket but as I explained in my thread about the NTE5 its a little unconventional as it was fitted by electricians working for the builder I think and was originally an extension.

When the engineer came to install the extra line he looked at the cabling in the recess on the outside of the wall and said it had been looped which was illegal, I explained about the builder, he tested the connection and linked the new line to it and said it should be ok for broadband (at the time BT were just marketing the fixed rate DSL products and I could not get it because I was over the maximum distance)

Was only when extended reach was rolled out I could get anything.

Do have a DECT phone but its not on the same line and the base is nowhere near the line equipped with DSL.

No will have to borrow one from someone at work as only portable radio I have is a DAB/FM one and the one that does MW (or AM) is classed as portable but not that portable.

Socket with DECT base also has a filter on it, only socket that isn't filtered is one the alarm is connected to upstairs but that has a special faceplate on it that basically hardwires it to the line.

I'm using a Philips DECT phone thats about 3 years old.

Did you have ADSL already when the alarm was fitted ? if so it should have a filter BUT if you got ADSL after the alarm then it's unlikely to be filtered and could well be part of the problem.

ADT (the alarm company) advised me not to have broadband on the same line as the alarm (I couldn't get it at the time it was fitted.

It was always my intention to have it installed when it became available so I had a second line installed and then the following year had broadband installed when extended reach was available.

The 2700 is now active on my line so will see what a difference it makes.

Just run a test on TBB and am up to 953 Kbps

Attenuation has fallen to 56.5 dB

downstream rate according to the router is now 1632 Kbps down

So thats with 2700 HGV Mitch? If so can you keep some before and after stats and speedtests.I am sure Q will be interested, as if I recall correctly he was somewhat sceptical of its benefits on a long line.

Yes with the 2700 which has been connected since about 9 tonight.

Just nipped on to check before I go for some shut eye.

Attenuation is holding steady at 56.5 and downstream speed is also steady at 1632 and noise margin is 12 dB (BT speedtest also shows 1632)

No retrains so far according to the stats so looking very good.

The the most stable its been I think, just need my profile to increase now.

The profile will take up to 5 days to catch up, Mitch, but you will gain 250k from the 2700 as things stand. Milton Keynes loves 2700s.

Does seem rather an amazing bit of kit I have to say.

Surprised more ISPs haven't started stocking them but by the looks of 2wire's site they only sell to big telcos.

I'm keeping hold of my netgear though just in case.

I've used LibertySurf (remember them), BT, Claranet, Virgin, 1 day with Freeserve but after 3 hours of hearing the busy signal I rang Customer Services and asked to cancel (advisor pretty much begged me not to cancel and said she'd organise callback from tech support, I said no point because your modem racks are overloaded)

DSL ISPs: Virgin, Namesco (not bad but got slow in evenings, a trace route showed they used plusnet for transit), Newnet, Zen and of course now IDnet.

I had 17 dial up ISPs, most of which I can't remember now, but the first was Compuserve. ADSL is much simple, Freeserve/Orange, Nildram, IDNet.

Was with Eclipse also on dialup for a bit but left when they were taken over by Kingston as things did seem to start breaking (glad I don't live in Hull)
