Draytek 120 with Time Capsule

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with a setup of a Draytek Vigor 120 connected to an Apple Time Capsule or Airport Base Station. I am moving to the aforementioned setup from a Draytek 2820Vn due to a number of issues with the 2820 and to upgrade myself for native IPv6 support.

I will update this thread once I receive my Vigor 120 for anyone who is interested. As far as I am aware a Vigor 120 + TC or Airport BS is still one of the few IPv6 options at the moment.

I use the Vigor 120 with an AEBS and it's very stable with excellent throughput on my adslmax line, the only hassle is getting the stats from the modem. It can be done as the Vigor 120 does have a limited DHCP server,if you place the AEBS in bridge mode with a static IP address and then I log into the Vigor 120 web interface from my wifi laptop.

Thanks for your response Steve. I did wonder about accessing the web interface of the 120. Just thinking aloud but would it not be possible to give the 120 a static IP by adding the MAC address of the modem to the AEBS DHCP reservations?

I am awaiting my 120 from Misco which can't come soon enough as the 2820 has a weird issue where it remains connected to the Internet but won't allow any packets through. It works after restarting it but I'm currently in the 10 day training period so I'm reluctant to keep rebooting the thing.

I think when your using the Vigor 120 as a PPPOA/PPPOE bridge to the Time Machine, it just forwards the Public IP address to the Time Machine so therefore in this mode it has no IP address. As I said you can circumvent this temporarily to get the stats (my line has a full sync on max so I rarely check)

Airport Utility> Internet >Connect using ethernet (from PPPOE), Connect sharing - off (bridge mode) from share a Public IP address. Next TCP/IP  > configure IPv4 manually IP address 192.168.2.12, Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Router IP address 192.168.2.1 Then update

Connect Computer via wireless or ethernet to TM it should give an address of 192.168.2.10 if not set manually IP 192.168.2.10 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 router address 192.168.2.1.

You should then be able to access the Vigor 120 Web interface at 192.168.2.1 user = admin password = <blank>.

Thanks for that Steve. I just got my 120 today and set it up. It's a shame there is no way to access the information without dropping PPPoE. The method I've found best for accessing the stats is just plugging an Ethernet cable to the iMac from the modem with a static IP set, that way it doesn't cause the Time Capsule to reboot and LAN connections to drop.

Have you setup IPv6 with the modem and AEBS (if you have an IPv6 model)? The Time Capsule supports native IPv6 and the 120 apparently has IPv6 pass-through support so should work. I'm waiting on Draytek support as to why it isn't picking IPv6 up from IDNet automatically.

Just to update on the IPv6 issue for anyone interested. The Time Capsule doesn't support DHCPv6/native IPv6 when in PPPoE mode for whatever reason. I have raised a bug report with Apple but I doubt anything will be done about it. Such a shame the feature is missing on one of the few consumer devices on the market that claim to be IPv6 ready.

I wonder how Bill is using his AEBS with IPv6 then as he's connected via PPPOE? I'm guessing he's using a 6 to 4 tunnel :dunno:

It depends, there are a number of possible work arounds. The TC will work fine in tunnel mode or by setting the IPv6 details manually. Another option is to have another device do the PPPoE as the Time Capsule works perfectly with IPv6 in bridge mode.

I am going to try setting up a Linux box to do the PPPoE stuff and try the TC with IPv6 in bridge mode and will update the thread for anyone interested.
