Hmm, day #1 with IDNet - and I'm hoping the speed picks up.

According to the Kitz site my 45.5db should see a sync of about 7200 but I'm getting 6171kbps.

With my previous provider I'd regularly get 7-8000kbps sync with 1200+ on the downstream.

But taking that into account I'm also not seeing great numbers on speedtests.

The BT speedtest reports

I'm paid up for the full package so want to make sure I'm getting the best from it.

Bandwidth Allowance: 360GB Total (Peak: 60GB / Off Peak: 300GB )


Nothing's changed. Same router, line etc. Am I just being impatient? Do I need to wait 10 days for the line to "profile"?

Yes, t'was Be*. Was very happy with the performance - left for "other" reasons.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not judging. Far too early for that.

Support have been great. DNS changes were prompt as have responses to my questions. So I'm certainly not unhappy.

If the service from O2's ADSL division was anything like I received I'm not surprised tashtogo left.

Hi Tashtego and welcome to the forum. :welc: :karma:

As Steve has said, you're now stuck with the BT infrastructure between you and IDNet. Your profile needs to settle, it's currently 500k lower than your sync speed would indicate.

The other thing I note is that your slower speed test was during the World Cup match, and that may have impacted things. IDNet have bought in extra bandwidth for the event (well, three months as that's the minimum time they can buy it for), but as far as we know, BT have done nothing in the way of extra bandwidth or greater capacity on the VPs. Even with your priority traffic level, you can still be bottle-necked at the exchange.

Even though my pings have gone down my throughput is lower, world cup fever destroys the net, just like those little flags on cars destroy my ability to focus and make me want to go prune all those flags with secateurs, I saw a car the other day with dozens, at least his vehicle is slightly more open to the elements though  :evil:

Don't tell me I'm stuck with their bandwidth throttling.... this could be a very short membership.

I left BT 3+ years ago because of their change to video QoS when I don't have any interest in video. I own a perfectly good TV.

It's not throttling so much as sometimes inadequate bandwidth.

I agree. BT's position can be very damaging to ISPs, who make all the right moves but are hit by a lack of investment from BT in their part of the network. The only way to avoid this, though, is to go LLU, where the only BT involvement is the 'last mile'.

Yeah, I tend to forget they have things pretty tightly wrapped up here. After being away from BT for so long I really am hoping things aren't as bad as they were.
