The World Cup will be taking a lot of BT's bandwidth at the moment.

Happy Surfer

bt profile is 7150k

i understand the world cup being on and some people watching games on pc at work etc but the speed reduction is terrible, videos take donkeys to load, and browsing slow too, i understand some people only have 1-2meg connections at best anyway but when you are used to 6.5meg on a regular basis reguardless of time of day its hard to accept.

Rik

It's hard to suggest any other cause. IDNet have bought in extra bandwidth to allow for the world cup, and so far their network is coping fine. I'm not seeing any speed issues here, so it suggests a problem local to your exchange.

Do a couple more BT tests and let IDNet have the results, they can check the line for you.

ok thanks rik will do, how do i contact idnet with the results?

Steve

Just copy and past the BT speedtest results into a text file, then when you've got a few email them to support@idnet.com

Not that its going to help you, but I have the same problem, down from my usual 800k/sec and a bit to about 50k/sec. Thats with exchange priority lol.

I thought something had chopped my telephone line or somthing, then I had a look in here, totally didnt think about the World cup taking all the bw.

Its painful, just like those buzzing trumpet things they play constantly around the matches.

England will probably be out soon tho so the speeds might pick up lol
Sept 22nd 2011, IDNet 8mb ADSL max. Draytek vigor 100 & a Soekris net4801.

Glenn

My own line is down to sub 1mb speeds

The frustrating thing is that I know IDNet have bought in sufficient extra bandwidth so their own network can cope, they have to pay for it for three months, so it's an expensive option for them, but if BT don't match their effort, it's all for naught. :(

I tried to do a speedtest yesterday, but as ever, it fails on my line  :shake:

Not bad considering its world cup hell out there, I'll check speedtest and ping again tonight after 6pm
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Ray

Using Speedtest which I don't think is that reliable all is still ok here, even though pings are well off what they are when I test them, and I don't believe my speed either on this test either, but its not showing any major slow down like yours Ray  :dunno: I am guessing you are ADSL 2+ by the upload speed.

My pings are OK, but I'm seeing a 10% drop in throughput.

I'm on home Supermax, I think it's exchange contention, Gary, my exchange has had red VPs for several months and it seems BT aren't in a rush to do anything about it. :( It's only a small rural exchange with about 1600 subscribers.

9db, it was happy at 6 - 3db beforehand for about 75 days, no resyncs etc, I only rebooted it to see if it was a local problem  :'(
