I've finally taken the plunge and installed OpenSuSe on a spare (old) laptop. When I say 'I' I mean a sysadmin who sits next to my wife at Cambridge Uni. No problem getting live support  ;)

Now, I would like to have to rely as little as possible on this kind soul so need to get up to speed as quickly as possible. Call me a sad old git but I much prefer reading books than monitors so can anyone recommend a good one?

The O'Reilly books are usually reliable but I'd like, if possible, a recommendation from somebody who's been here, done that and is now wearing the (XL) t-shirt  ;D

TIA

"Linux For Dummies 2006 edition "available in all good libraries and" Linux in easy steps" by Mike McGrath

are 2 that I use.

I have dabbled with Suse and have to say it is not the easiest to start on.

PclinuxOS from  www.pclinuxos.com would be a much better bet ,there are several versions to suit your taste,I am trying the SAM Linux remaster which uses the XFCE desktop, really is very good too.

There are plenty of Linux how to sites around ,many for complete beginners.

Stick with it,Linux is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than windoze  ;D ;D

Found this site for you...............

Thanks for that lot, DB.

The only reason I've gone with SuSE is because of the expert my wife shares an office with. If I really get stuck I know I can ask him but I don't want to take liberties.

Suse is a good system but not so easy to learn for a beginner.

Best thing is to download several live CD ISO files and try different systems, till you find one you like.

Unlike windows it is all free and with live CDs you run in memory, can use the system as you like and then just move on to the next one, plus ,as you generally nee less disc space for Linux some users will multiboot their systems with several distibutions at once.

We dual boot PClinuxOS/WinXP here,my 11 year old would tell you that Linux is "Well wicked".

Go here DISTROMANIA for a list of Linux distrobutions (this list is not all available!!) .

Mepis

Ubuntu/Kubuntu

Puppy

Dream Linux

Damn Small Linux

these are all popular with beginners, but  PCLINUXOS is without doubt the best linux around for most users.
