Email scam

Hi all.
Got this this afternoon in my inbox.
I know that 99% of idnetters are of a higher intelligence standard than the usual drongo, but just be careful out there!

IDnet support have been copied the email by me.

Dear E-mail Account Owner,

We would like to inform you that we are currently carrying out scheduled maintenance and upgrade of our webmail service and as a result of this; our E-mail client has been changed and your original password will be reset. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.

To maintain your E-mail account, you must reply to this email immediately and enter your current password here (******).

Failure to do this within 48 hours will immediately render your email account deactivated from our database.

Thank you for using Our webmail.

A good rule of thumb. If an email doesn't address you by name, it's a fake.

just out of interest was the email from IDnet?

just got a text from my daughter saying that she got email from IDnet saying to email them her password.

Rule of thumb #2 If you are asked for any personal details,usernames ,passwords it is definitely a scam. NEVER EVER give these details out to anyone, a genuine company with security systems on their sites/forums/mail etc. will never ask for such things.

she wouldnt and didnt but asked as it was from IDnet...havent seen it so I cant say for definate thats where its from

Probably caused by unprotected machines as usual. There are still millions that believe that they are safe without a firewall and AV, The " I only visit safe sites" brigade are still out there on mass.

Indeed. I'm being given a woman's laptop from work on Monday, to remove of all spyware, malware and virus rubbish. She used it online with no protection at all and within a couple of weeks the laptop was unusable. I fear my Monday night may be a tedious one.

I've a lappy coming in tomorrow, same probs as you Niall..... infact it's so bad that it refuses to even start!!!
Had one last week that had a combined total of over 900 trojans, viruses and malware bits.

I'm about due for a revisit from the same one that, no matter how much I tell them and how well I protect it, still manages to become a haven for all malware

A colleague ran an XP SP1 disk through an old laptop and decided to connect it to our ADSL connection at work to patch it and then asked me to have a look as it was running slow.

Put Avast! 5 on and nearly 900 viruses.

I downloaded the patches from MS download catalogue, ran the XP disk and patched it 'offline' and then installed an AV offline, only then did I reconnect it to download the less serious patches.

The FROM box states that it's from idnet, but ignore that.
The Reply-To address is some dickhead on gmail.

thanks Dave thats what it was.something must have got through to my kids from all the times ive banged on about security and been wary of stuff like this as they're all very good and aware of scams

I got a telephone call yesterday which was displayed as International. I don't know anyone abroad that would telephone me so I don't normally pick up but unfortuately I was expecting a local call and picked it up without looking at the display. Anyway some indian sounding gentleman stared to ask if I had a broadband connection I told him I had but he was not very clear so I politely said that I was sorry but I couldn't hear him and put the phone down. Presumably he would have gone on to ask who my service provider is.
