I've been trying to diagnose my connection problems using the titular speed test, but I can't run the third test, which requires logging into IDNet with the user name speedtest@speed_tester (or something like that). Do others have the same problem? Do I need to contact IDNet support first?

Thanks!

Steve

:welcome: :karma: Fortunately never had to do test three . What you could do is email what you've got to support or give them a call. You could also post what results you've got here plus your router stats, I'm sure you'll get some good advice.

Thank you all!  ;D  Called IDNet today and they're sending out a service engineer tomorrow to check out the situation - amazingly quick response, considering that it took TalkTalk nearly a month to send someone to fix a line problem for my gran!

Steve

We'll keep our fingers crossed they find a fault. :fingers:

I have a similar problem running test 3 ...
I must be doing something wrong.
I saved my router config details in a file then amended them with suggested login details i.e. user name speedtest@speedtest_domain and password <blank>. The router re-boots but fails to connect. I cannot crack it. I suppose I need to disable NIS etc ... ???

I am still reluctant to contact idnet support as I do not believe it is their service at fault.
I have two PCs connected to the router, one hardwired while the other one connects wirelessly. Only hardwired one shows problems with internet speed ... so I need to inspect both hardware (cable, ports etc) and software (processes running etc). Both PCs run NIS 2010. There are no obvious diffs between the two. I am completely puzzled.

I think you're right, eliminate the cable and NIC. A quick way to do that would be to swap the cables at the router. If the problems persist, it's likely to be a software issue on the affected machine.

Welcome to the forum. :) :welc: :karma:

OK, thanks.
So far I used the same cable and the same mobo port (mobo has two gigabit ones) and swapped router ports ... no effect ...
I have ordered some CAT6 short cables to experiment with ... awaiting delivery ...
I can still swap mobo ports with the existing cable ...
I made no obvious changes to the software. Had both NIS 2010 and spybot running in parallel for months without any probs with internet speed ...
I got rid off spybot in desperation.
Once I have more time next week I will inspect all the processes running and I will use netstat to check on what processes utilise the network.

That is the plan ...

Coming back to speedtester ...
After making the change to the router config do i need to re-boot both the router and the PC ???
I thought it should be sufficient that the router re-boots itself after making the change to the config.
The router runs its built-in firewall. Should I disable it for testing ???

Thanks and Regards

Rik

Normally changing a router's config forces a reboot. It shouldn't, in theory, be necessary to re-boot the PC, but it can't do any harm. The firewall should have no impact on the test, afaik, but I've never reached a test 3 to be certain.

but I've never reached a test 3 to be certain.
I am on 24Mb product.
Line stats suggest max c. 7Mbps.
Router syncs @ 6000kbps.
I use thinkbroadband's speed tool to monitor the speed (Is it rubbish ? Can you suggest something else ?).
The other PC achieves 3-4-5Mb download speeds so it is OK.
Speedtester run on it returns reasonable max speeds too.

The situation with the problem PC is different.
BT's speedtester returns very different results whenever run.
Once 3Mb, another time 1Mb but ... it happens it returns as low as 300kb or even 100kb !!!
Then it prompts me to Test 3 which, clearly, I cannot complete ...
I do not think it is essential for me to complete Test 3 but it could be valuable, I suppose.

Anyway.

Thanks for the advice.

Regards

PS
The connection was stable for months.
It is only a few months ago when it started to deteriorate but I cannot associate that moment with any hardware or software installation.
If I could then the problem would have been easy to resolve ...

Rik

I so empathise with your closing comment. :)

If the line is delivering the correct performance to the other PC, it has to be a software or hardware issue on the affected PC. Try disabling NIS and seeing what happens.
