Heavy packet loss tonight

Boston (Lincolnshire) Exchange.
Peterborough Node.

Pages taking an age to load, often failing completely.

This happened 2 weeks ago every night but eventually fixed itself.  No one was able to report a problem then, I wonder if they can this time.

Various ping test show packet loss, and tracert test shows timeouts.

I don't suppose anyone else is suffering?

Simon

Sorry, no, all fine here in Sussex.

There are problems in the Pinner area, according to this:

Hmm, Pinner is in Middlesex not Lincolnshire, and also I'm on 21cn not 20cn.  Checking my router log it seems I lost sync 6 times last night, bringing this week's total number of sync losses to 15... and it's only Tuesday.

Lance

Does it give the reason of the resync? It might be worth runing routerstats to track the noise margin.

Well my Line Attenuation jumped from 53db (been that for 5 years) to 59db.  That's when all the problems began.  Unstable connection, packet loss at night, significant drop in sync rate.  Basically my internet is knackered lol.

Rik

Have you connected to the test socket, tried a different filter and a different router?

Attenuation does go up when on ADSL 2+ so that could be the issue that started the instability
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Yes, yes and yes. ;D

Gary

It could mean that the quality of your line and your attenuation means you need to be put back to a ADSL Max line, you can't actually go back from 21CN but I believe BT can alter your profile so it acts like Adsl Max, which in theory would give give you more stability again, Rik or Steve or Lance will know more about this. Check your wiring as well shielded Cat 5E or cat 6 and the shortest run from socket to router is best.

Those on 21CN adsl2+ can be re modulated back to an adslmax like connection, it seems some lines have too much noise/interference and the higher frequencies are disrupted. In Klipp 's case his allowances and upstream sync would stay the same the downstream attenuation may fall a little and the connection may become stable again. However packet loss on occasions seems to be a recurring feature on 21CN but frequent resyncs are surely down to the local telephone line. As Lance suggested a trial of routerstats may be worth a shot to look at the variation in downstream margin over time.

Quotetrial of routerstats

What does this mean? :)

Rik

Download and install a copy or Routerstats or Routerstats Light:

Leave a computer running 24/7 with it active for 2-3 days.

OK, I have that running now.  It's level at 6.5db at this time.

Rik

Leave it running and see if there are noise blips, particularly during the evening/overnight period.
