The BBC is reporting a security issue with non-standard cursors. This only affects users of Internet Explorer.

"Animated cursors could prove risky for Windows users, Microsoft has warned.

The software giant is investigating reports that the way Windows handles alternatives to the traditional arrow cursor can leave PCs open to attack. "

Windows - more leaks than a plumber!

As expected, the update patch to fix the .ANI cursor problem is now available for download/installation from the MS Windows Update web site.

Further posts with details of patches should be made in General Software Updates. This thread remains open for discussion of issues arising from the patch.

Thanks.

Another update which i wont be downloading!

I only ever install SP's and nothing more...im sure nod32/spyware docotor/kerio can handle the rest!

Rik

I prefer to err on the side of caution, Avenger. So far no ill effects, but then I wasn't, and wouldn't be, using animated cursors (I think they'd drive me mad, or should that be more mad? :))

Well, after rebooting after this patch my RealTek HD Audio driver started to throw a wobbler. Basically there was some sort of exception with the control panel / Settings program. However downloading and installing the latest drivers this fixed the problem.

Rik

There's a specific patch for your problem, Rob, details are here.

That was exactly the problem I had. Installing the latest drivers from my Motherboard manufacturers site sorted the problem for me.

RE: Rik

Well, as they say, it doesent affect firefox :) - only IE, and, in my opinion, if you use IE - your to expect the worst ;)

Rik

Agreed, but you have to resort to IE occasionally. :(
