snr drop

Stats at present;
Router down conn speed 20404  (was 19000 ish)
Router up conn speed 1276  (was 1100 ish)
Line att 23db down  (was 20db)
Line att 10db up (was same))

BUT..... snr was hovering around 6db constant and has dropped to 3.1db.
Swapped routers with same result.
BT have probably been messing with the line but I'm a little worried that the snr is on a downward spiral and my line is heading for trouble.
Any ideas folks??

ADSL2+ will happily work with a 3db margin. Does the SNR drop further during the evenings?

Rick, you could always ask support to see if you can have a target margin set at 6db, I'm not sure if they can do it themselves yet though. Rik was on the trial at the beginning of the year, I believe his line is happy at 3db.

I have a couple of friends on ADSL2+ and they both have noise margins around 3dB and they don't seem to get any problems, I would just sit back and enjoy the slightly higher connection speed.

So will ADSL2... in fact it'll work at zero db if your router can hold sync.

You're confusing what it will work at and what BT will allow it to be set at

True, the trial is over and currently ISPs aren't able to request the 3 & 0db margins, but they are certainly possible and, hopefully, the scheme will roll out later this year.

Looking ahead to FTTC... I realise that the users can't see their line stats (unless IDNet do an AAISP- hint ) but the ISPs can, will they have the ability to change target SNR etc?

Regarding AAISP, be aware they have built their own routers (called Firebrick which have features that commerical kit may not have.

Ah, didn't realise that... I'm sure I saw somewhere that BT can see the line stats from the WAN side, so assumed they would make this information available to the ISP.

Think they do via something called Broadband Customer Reporting.

Zen also make data available but this is dependent on a feed from BT which doesn't get updated after provisioning it would appear but if I ring support they can check on their BT Wholesale portal.

I suspect Adrian Kennard has included facilities ine the firmware of his routers to provide a feed directly to the portal for his more inquisitive customers as it probably saves a lot of support calls.
