I know what you mean, however it must run for the life of that MAC as those are the rules as they read, or at least I have seen it said a few times elsewhere. It does make total sense once you think about it. Granted it seems a bit odd the first time you know about it though. I think it's meant to cover the punter if the first ISP they go to mucks the End User about, and then has to go to another for service. I doubt BT thought that up though, sounds more like an OFCOM imposed thing really! :D

Anyway, the life of the MAC Code is up fairly soon, and then it will be up to IDNet alone to provide an "always on"service.

I know that BT managed to turn off Nildram before they turned on IDNet when I migrated, so I wouldn't rely too much on the rules. :)

Personally, I don't see why they use SSB, multiple accounts, eg personal and company, must be quite commonplace.

Having used the new  6.2.16.3 firmware for a couple of weeks, I can say that although the idle timeout problem has not totally gone away, the firmware has improved the operation of the ST585 so that it stays connected for longer (over a day is good on my line) and also does not suffer the timeout problem as often as it did.

Meanwhile, the used Netgear DG834GT that I found on Ebay won't even sync on my line at the moment so maybe the ST585 isn't as bad as I thought.

Which is why I am reluctant to recommend routers since Max was introduced, Phil. With vanilla-ADSL, it was possible to give recommendations with a fair degree of certainty, but nowadays, people's experiences seem to vary wildly. :(
