Now in an ideal world I would love another Mac when this one goes to Mac heaven.. but looking at the prices for a Macbook = £800, just for the one i have now, but newer of course.

This leads me to believe I may have to go to Windows. Now I've only ever used windows for a year , and it ran millennium I think? I got fed up of the virus's, the pop up's etc. But I didn't give it a chance

How much would you guys pay for a good windows machine? I installed Norton on my windows one last time, and it was a nightmare. I guess i'm trying to gauge how much and how to make it run nicely :)

Price would depend on what features you need/want. Win7 is thankfully nothing like Win ME and there are plenty of excellent free AV/Malware apps now.

The other thing to do is buy a machine with no OS and use a Linux distro.

Linux is a possibility - my first machine was linux and all the command lines lol I understand it's better now. I only really need it for surfing, music, watching DVD's, course work

Tina

what make would you go for? like samsung or something? would i get a good one for say £400 - 500 ?

You could buy today's special value notebook from QVC, Tina, try it for 30 days, then send it back. It will only cost you the £9.99 postage.

Windows 7 is very good Tina (been using it at work and am intending to retire my current home PC later this year and buy a new PC with it preinstalled)

If you presfer a desktop machine you should be able to get a very capable spec for that price range.

Personally I'd recommend Mesh Computers as the prices are reasonable and the components are good quality.
