Thundering along at 350 Kbps

Looks like my connection has taken a dramatic dive and I'm now getting a blistering speed of 350 Kbps

Zen have asked me to change my filter and I've now requested a regrade back to Max equivalent.

Can anyone tell me the performance thresholds under which BT have to come out?

I believe it depends on your line, as to what is deemed acceptable, do a BT speed testit's on there.

Openreach have been working in the area for weeks so maybe they disturbed the circuits.

I may have to look at a cheaper ISP if 350 is all I can get now as I'm not paying 25 quid a month for it.

As Glenn says, Mitch, a BT test is essential to see both the range of acceptable speeds and your current profile. I had a resync at 1:17 this morning, after 50 days of uptime, so I suspect BT work.

I really hope I can get it fixed.

I'm looking to get an NTE fiited too to try and help with the situation.

I've got a dreadful feeling the minimum indicated was 200 Kbps which may mean I'd be back to little better than bonded ISDN or Home Highway I think they called it.

I'm currently on 11.9 and about to remove power from the router overnight to see if I can trip a line card reset.

BT's speedtester indicates the fault threshold is 100 Kbps.

I was getting some comical sync rates about 2 months ago, like 96kbps downstream.  Turns out my netgear router was dying.

Well. I've left it out since last night and now reconnected and getting the exact same speeds so I fear you maybe right.

Did you notice anything strange about the hardware itself such as it running a tad warm?

In a word, Yes.  However this was June when we had that brief hot spell, so it's hard to say with any certainty.  Other than that, it seemed to be behaving normally in terms of booting up, the lights on the front, and so on.  I was convinced it was a line fault to begin with.

I'll wait to see what happens on Tuesday when I go back to Max but failing that I'll dispose of the router and try the 2700 again but to be honest I found it a bit slow.

My thoughts are to get a Linksys next as they are now effectively Cisco or Thomson which Zen but I may have a chat with technical support.

Well I've even tried factory resetting the router now but to no avail.

If you don't mind shelling out, I recommend DrayTek 2710n.  I got one recently and not only has it never crashed since I first plugged it in, but it seems to have lowered my Line Attenuation thus giving me my highest downstream/upstream sync rates ever.  I don't think it supports ADSL1 though...

I'm s bit reluctant to spend a packet (excuse the pun) on a router after getting burnt when buying a Netgear Rangemax which was not really that great for the line.

Zen sell Thomson 585s so I might contact technical support and enquire about their experiences with them on long lines and also the warranty arrangements.

Approaching Netgear is a bit of a non starter as when I contacted them last time I just got back a standard response.

Just spoken to Zen tech support, looks like I've been put on a banded profile.

Got to ring back Tuesday when I'm regraded to ADSL to get it removed.

Thats what it looked although I don't think I've seen your router sync recently. We've seen it a few times recently, people migrating onto ADSL2+ with long lines ending up with very low throughput and a subsequent re profile back to adslmax. IMO there's enough experience now to cut out this middle ground it's a waste of time and effort.
