Those are my stats. Is there any way I can ger higher? Would fibre optic give me good speeds? All i'm getting at the moment is 3.40mbs and 3.42mbs when plugged into the master socket (the thing behind the faceplate).

The profile is correct for the sync rate on the line, 4000 - 4543 gives a sync of up to 3.5 Mbps. If you have fibre available on your exchange, then you should see an improvement in speeds. Log on to the IDNet customer portal an check via the availability checker, to see what is available.

The major thing to affect your speed, will be the distance from the exchange, along with noise on your line. Can you do a BT speedtest?

Your noise margin is high at 10db, which suggests some earlier noise has caused it to be raised  by 3db-6db to try and stabilise the line. If you maintain your connection for 14+ days, the target NM will drop in 3db increments until it reaches 6db or the line becomes unstable. That could get you an extra Mbps.

Ok. So when you say maintain connection.. The router must be left on or there must be a powered PC using the connection?

Router has to be powered and and have no drops in sync or significant errors on the line.

Your Upstream is uncapped, if you don't need the increased upstream speed and would be happy with a 448k cap then it MIGHT ( and its only might! ) increase the downstream speed a little.

The cynic in me would suggest it would probably work better re profiled back to adslmax.

Netgear DGN1000 vs Netgear DG834G

Currently using the latter. Is one significantly better than the other? (IDNET prices them exactly the same even though the DGN1000 seems much newer)

Also I can't see anywhere to buy on the website.

Would a cap on uploads really increase downloads? Would it be change backable if there was no improvement?

Why is the upload seemingly having so little interruption compared to download?

Any ideas when fibre optic with IDNET will put in an appearance in central Scotland?

I checked 'stats from area' with a speed test site and even Virgin Media (they only do fibre, right?) seemed really slow at around 6mb to 11mb.. with most 'copper' broadband being in the 2-4 area So is it possible where I live just has hellish wiring? There wern't many stats, but what there was was suggestive.

How much does it cost to have 'from box to house wiring' replaced? (Something tells me that it involves as much hassle as redoing the whole road and isn't worth it even if it could be done)

I've no experience of the DGN1000 - it's not the router for fibre, is it? If the 834 is a v5, I wouldn't recommend it, look at a Speedtouch, maybe?

A phone call would be the quickest way to buy. You will get the router set up for you, but you'll pay more than you might elsewhere as IDNet don't buy in the kind of quantities that the big retailers do.

An upload cap might improve download speeds, but no-one can say for sure in advance. It should be reversible, but support will confirm this if you ask them to make the change.

Upload uses lower frequencies in the spectrum so is less liable to noise  pickup.

I had bad experience with a DGN1000, it kept crashing.  Might have been a dodgey router rather than a general problem.  I didn't keep it long enough to find out.
