I came back from a weeks holiday on Sunday to find both my profile and sync had dropped some 2000Kb. I stupidly left the router connected while we were away and I assume my line experienced some instability which has messed up my sync and profile.

I'm on ADSL2+ and did have a good stable connection of 6000-7000Kb which I've had for the past few years and a profile of 5500.

My 2 month old router is now showing a connection of 4538Kb, Noise Margin 6, Output power 128dbm, attenuation 51db.

I've tried the test socket and a new filter with no increase in sync. I've done a BT test and it's showing a profile of 3500.

Interestingly I tried my old router and got the following stats

Connection 3023KB, Noise Margin 19.5, Output Power 12.2dBm, attenuation 51db.

I contacted support today (before I tried my old router) who said as the service is dynamic there is nothing they can do. At this time I thought my noise margin was still at 6.0.

I'm confused why the two routers are reporting such a large difference in noise margin, is it worth contacting support again with my old routers stats and see if they can get the noise margin reduced? Which router should I believe?

Is there any other things I can try to get my sync back up to where it was.

Rik

The profile fits your newer router, the old router has probably depressed it further - 2.5M is what I would now expect. Have you tried a quiet line test? (Dial 17070 option 2)

I've tried the quiet line test and all seems ok, just a low background hum, no pops or crackles.

Tried another BT test, its still showing a 3500 profile, it doesn't however complete it gets stuck on 96%

When I had my 6000-7000 sync my new router showed a noise margin of 6.0 sometimes dropping to 3.0, I always doubted it's accuracy. I therefore would tend to believe my older routers value of 19.5 as this would fit in with my lower sync speed. Are idnet able to check and confirm my noise margin?

If I leave my router connected for a few days and the line is stable will the margin reduce automatically or is it best for idnet to get BT to reset it?

Rik

They'll see what the router is reporting, afaik.

You can ask IDNet to get it reset, but BT often refuse these days. :(

Thanks Rik, I'll email James with my old routers values and see what he recommends. I can always reconnect that router if they need to see the higher noise margin value.

If BT refuse to reset it if the router holds a stable connection will it reduce overtime automatically?

Idnet arranged for BT to reset my line, I've now got a sync of 6744 so back to normal  :thumb:

I will now just have to wait for my profile to increase from 2500

Same here, speeds have been low ever since the 16Hr outage weeks ago, when it came back on it dropped to 4500  my profile was 7500, was told it would go back up by IDEnet but it never did, that was weeks ago.
Told me to do a BT speed test, mailed that off but was told that was normal for my line!!. Have been getting around 6Meg download for the last 12 months!!
I was not impressed with the reply I got from IDNET. I suppose the blame lies with BT then, or my line has done a wobbly or something!!

Rik

ADSL is rate adaptive, so there's a range, quite a wide range, of speeds which BT deem acceptable unfortunately.

Was better off befor the intro of 21CN.
Just read this, about sums up BT.

I was too.

Started off well on ADSL2+ and got 1.4Mbps for about 2 months and then it dramatically dropped.

Now back on ADSL

Looks like a lot of people are regarding back to ADSL and reporting improved speeds!! :dunno:

Rik

I wouldn't say a lot, but it's certainly been the case for a number of people. The problem with forums is that you tend only to hear about the bad experiences. For me, ADSL2+ has been worth an extra Mb, so I'm happy with it.

I very much regret going to ADSL2+. A steady 3.0+Mbps download on old adsl became about 2.0Mbps  and now having regraded to ADSL MAX and getting 1.5. and  :confuse2:

Rik

Well, you're connected to an MSAN rather than the DSLAM, so possibly your router isn't as compatible as it was. I'd start by trying an alternative router if you can.

Rik

Can you get your d/stream sync speed out of the router and let me have that plus a BT speed test?

Will do, but she who must  be humoured has advised me that-dare I mention it- my prawn and egg curry is ready and I am required to pour the beers.

Rik

I'm having curry tonight too, though I've not been told more than there's lamb and chicken involved. ;D

Rik

You have a raised noise margin 9 or 12db which is costing you speed. Your current profile is 2500, so it sounds like exchange congestion may be a factor.

As long as your happy, ADSL+2 is step back for some of us. Yes I agree we tend to hear all the bad things about ADSL on many forums, but it's the only way we can share our experience and get advice and help.

pctech

You only think and have time to mention it when it doesn't work as intended, if it did you wouldn't give it a second thought.

I understand that, and I'm not criticising you, I'm just saying that forums tend to distort the picture.

BT speedtester has not been performing for last two days.  Get as far as confg.d/l spd 2194kbps which in a previous visit was also my IP Profile (this has been IP Profile since 27 Aug). BT stops at this point which shows as 96% completed but despite hanging on for several minutes never moves on. Also shows Exception::connection refused: connect.  Last test download figure noted on 1st Sept was 1499kbps. Router statistics show a d/stream sync rate at 3168 kbps and margin as 12db

Rik

So it looks like your noise margin has been bumped up to try and stabilise the line. Ask support if you've been put on a banded profile (I don't think you have, but it's one more thing to eliminate).
