I got a new one in December last year.its a HP Photsmart Premium.Good printer,nice quality prints,tad expensive on the inks but put up with it until compatibles are available.Any way down side of it is that it seems VERY noisy in between prin jobs.It doesn't matter if its a big document or a 1 or 2 page job, after every job it started clunking and whirring for about 30 secs then stop.This held up jobs in the queue and sometimes didn't print them at all.

So last week I had enough and queried it with HP,is it some sort of maintenance or head alignment thing.They said it does this at very first set up then periodically but not as I was getting it.So they gave instructions to power it down and how to do a semi full reset and to try again.well it made no difference so I am getting a replacement from them next week.

I've always found HP good, Baz, I hope they include a set of ink cartridges...

still waiting for a reply about that Rik  :)  in the email detail it mentioned other models that the inks need to be left in but didnt mention mine.They did also send 2 links to describe this detail,but they didnt work  ;D ;D


but yes i hope they do too as I have just fitted a new set 2 weeks ago and oddly enough,even though we havent done much printing since, after the reset they told me to do the ink monitor showed 2 were low  :o :o   me  not happy.All this made me think with the clunking etc it was doing a head clean,thats what it sounded like, and that must use a bit ink each time.

It does. Epsons used to be very bad in this respect.

really??  or is this some in joke that Ive missed and they are infact bad.

had one years ago and it was poor,driver probs,wasnt compatible with some software etc.

I followed the advice on this forum and replaced my HP with a Canon. Have had no problems with dry heads. Prints perfectly even after a five week break.

Just need to find some compats which don't seem to be available yet.

Six printers, the HP Photosmart, an HP laser, the Cannon ip6700 dedicated photo printer, a Sagem dye-sub photo printer, a Dymo Labelwriter and an HP portable photo printer. Oh, there is the old Photosmart I haven't got rid of yet too. :)

They're all in use, Baz. This machine backs up to 1 internal and five external drives daily, for example - takes about 5 minutes on average.

Well update to this printer problem.

Some thing was telling me to question this replacement from HP,you know when you just get that feeling,well I did question it and it turns out that the replacment unit,as they call it, is in fact a refurbished one.

Not happy with that so I told them I dont want a refurbished one as I bought brand new,only 9 months old so I expect a brand new replacement.
They handed my ticket to a case manager  :o :o  for one to one interaction  :)

problem been that i also got confirmation from UPS that it has been shipped and is now on their system.Informed HP of this and they said dont accept it from UPS.

What a carry on.Thereseems to be no way of stopping it getting here,just looked at UPS tracking and its

  TAMWORTH, GB     10/09/2010     15:30     ARRIVAL SCAN

so its on its way.
Would have been easier to go back to where I bought it for a replacement.But I bet that would cause problems too..."sorry sir but you need to deal with HP for this...."  etc.

Remember it's always the retailer who is responsible, Baz. A refurb is not unreasonable at 9 months, and they are tested more thoroughly than production models.

I was hoping for some  advice from you on this Rik Thanks.so if I went back they have to deal with it.

On the refrub.my thinking was what if it had the same problem that mine has,or a worse one. and to be honest I think equipment these days should have no faults at all.

Yes, the retailer would have to deal with it, and would have to check with HP that they have confirmed the fault. However... depending on their customer service, they could opt to arrange a repair or give you a replacement, so HP is probably the better bet in this case.

No equipment is perfect, but faults should be minor. My first model of this printer went back for some reason, I got a new one in return.

I've got the photosmart premium as well, Baz, and can confirm that mine only does the clunking and whirling ever so often. Certainly not before every print.

When I brought it last Dec/Jan time, it was a toss up between this and the canon  mp640 (i think). The HP won as it was £40 cheaper at the time!

thats interesting lance thanks.thats basically what HP have said,it does it on intial set up and then periodically,didnt state when, but not as mine is after every print

I had an HP printer replaced, after 8mths the retailer said contact HP, new or refurbished printer arrived within days worked better than my original, as Rik says refurbished is often better that off the production line sometimes, I would not worry, the unit will have the latest firmware for itself and any parts that were updated as well, you should be fine. After using HP I went on to Cannon and have never looked back, but that's just personal preference.

I agree that Canon are good printers. The problem is I have upgraded to Windows7 and Canon refuse to upgrade the drivers. So I was left with a useles scanner a semi useless printer and a not working too well camers. No more Canon products for me!

Comet Printer

This is not a bad printer for the price, nothing special but a good everyday workhorse.

I agree Rik,  but this printer isn't good enough for any serious stuff, but for everyday copy its fine

quick update on this.HP have said their complaints department will be in touch after they upped my ticket when I said I didnt want a refurbished unit.Havent heard from them yet.

UPS delivered the refurb one a day early  :thumb: I said to the guy that I have been advised not to accept it and he took it away.Very good about it he was.

So still waiting for HP to get in touch since wednesday.

TBH, Baz, you are outside the period when you can demand a new unit, so it's going to take someone reasonably senior to say yes in this instance.

update:  HP did eventually get in touch and just went through the whole script what the other two customer service people had told me.I told them I had contacted Comet who basically said they use HP returns policy.Back to square one then :)They eventually suggested,if I wanted to, to take it back to the shop and tell them to contact HP themselves and sort it from there side.

So I went back to comet and got it exchanged.Have to say the guy who dealt with it there was very good indeed, no bother at all for him.He had to call their own returns dept and get one shipped which would take a week but he just exchanged mine for one they had in stock and held onto mine until the new one came in.

Unfortunately the new one seems to be doing the same :( so I may be back again.Mr Comet did say just come back if I still have bother.I will try it for a bit longer and see how it goes but have to say for my first HP printer,who came recommended by lots of people, I am disappointed.

I am looking at different makes again now ;D ;D  So back to asking for suggestions from you guys  :)

Canon, Baz. In always used to recommend Brother, Kodak are supposed to be cheap to run, but I didn't think much to the print quality.

funny you should mention Canon Rik as I have looked at them.only thing that put me off was I had one years ago and it was poor quality.Yes I do mean years and they must have improved since

think it was this one I looked at or one in the same range but I notice they have some new models too.

dont need CD/DVD printing or fax but wireless yes

Canon were rubbish 20 years ago, Baz, and all the pro photographers used Epson. Epson rested on their laurels and Canon now make some of the best printers around. That said, I still prefer HP for documents.

I have a Canon photoprinter, Baz, imo HP don't do that so well because they use sRGB colourspace, so prints tend to green. HP, otoh, have always specialised in document printing and, starting from my first laser (£2,500 back in the late 80s), I've found their laser and inkjet printers produce crisper type. HP document scanning tends to be better too.

yeah have to agree that documents do look crisp on this HP.

whats the 640 like then Ray.Do you use the cd/dvd printing

I will say that my canon has good quality, but as said before I will not purchase another as they do not update their drivers, which renders them alsmost useless, if like me you have migrated to Windows 7. Im', one of these old fashioned people whi thinks things should last until they are worn out!

I've been very pleased with it, Baz, it produces good quality printouts of both documents and photos, the scanner is quite fast and it has the advantage of being useable as a copier without having to have the PC on. Yes I do use the CD/DVD label printing with the appropriate printable CD/DVDs.
