I use Eset NOD32  which expires shortly. As usual I am narked thast if we were in the USA it would be cheaper and hace discounts available, however it does work. I am running Windows 7 with Explorer and Thunderbird. Anyone any better suggestions than Eset please?

Microsoft security essentials or Avast are good alternatives

I stand by Avast personally. It works well, isn't intrusive, has regular updates, and is completely free for home use.

Or Linux ;)

Have I lost my way?

I have both running, one on each machine that I use.

Another vote for Avast.

Use it on all my Win machines.

Not free, but I would recommend F-Secure.

I changed from NOD32 to Avast on the laptop downstairs.. NOD32 let in some viruses, Avast hasn't so far.

Avast 5 free has a new release out this week, it is excellent.  I would not go back to Eset now, they have lost the plot recently and have failed to add updated signatures for some nasty stuff for days at time as well as there being some serious flaws in the product.

Glenn

I generally get 2 or 3 updates a day from Avast

I usually see more than that, I guess it depends on your settings and how much time you spend online. I think Avast are more efficient and proactive than many AV solutions, certainly reading their forum they are very much open to input and suggestions from their customers.

I wonder how such a seemingly good product remains free of charge?  Assuming there's a paid for version, what difference is there between the Free and Pro versions?

They have Pro/server and Security Suite versions available and they sell very well.

I use avast internet security (paid for) its very good but seems to take an age to start up, and slows the pc while it is loading. I have normally finished sorting my email by the time it is fully protecting my system :-\

NOD32 didn't work properly on my windows 7 machine, and I've read this week that there are issues with the latest version too (if I find the link again I'll post it later). I was forced to switch to Avast (free edition) which seems to work in a similar way to NOD32 so it gets my vote.

You must uninstall Nod/Eset from the start menu > Eset > Uninstall
