Getting absolutely nowhere downloading the new patch using the blizzard updater at the moment.    Before this latest patch i've at least had sloooow speeds of download for the patch but this time the blizzard downloader just sits there doing nothing.

For the first time since i've been playing WoW (5 years), i've had to install a bit torrent client just so that i can get anywhere downloading the latest patches in readiness.

I've also not been able to run a BT speedtest either in the last week or two.  Coincidence perhaps, but could this be residual stuff from the 'upgrades' that were done a few weeks back?

The new background download client currently on the live realms is known to be extremely slow. It shouldn't be an issue because I can't see the patch being deployed for quite sometime. It's been overhauled on the beta realms and it's blindingly fast so I'd imagine they will patch that in anyway when it's been fully tested. I'd guess you probably have another few weeks before the content you are being served goes live.

BT's speed test is... well BT's speed test  :D It currently doesn't work for me and a lot of other people. It was working a few days ago, it's just one of those mysteries of life as to why it only works sometimes.

And at different times for different people, Zap. :(

I'm used to the slow speed of the downloader from the many.. many many previous patches, this one doesn't even begin.. no 1%.. nothing, not even with the peer-to-peer stuff enabled.. my u-Bit Torrent client when i pointed it at the blizzard torrent file had no problems resuming it and connecting to many like-clients to pump up the DL speed.

The blizz updater was just a no go.

I've just checked my installation and I've received nothing to date which does seem strange. I've been seeing the notification for a number of days so I'm not exactly sure what's going on.

OK the reason I'm not getting anything is because the background client isn't launching, I just check Windows Task Manager and there's nothing there and I have it set to run both during the game and upon exit. It appears something is broken, I'll do a bit more research.

Zappa,
on the realm forum i'm on a few of the chaps on there had that problem and they were posting about it, and one chap says he's got the solution (albeit extreme)

QuoteI had the same issue. I found this solution on tech support forum and it worked for me:

Go to the WoW folder, delete BackgroundDownloader.exe and run the repair utility (make sure to untick the first two boxes and hit just "Check Files Only"). Got a new BackgroundDownloader.exe file and patch is now downloading!

naturally i would personally make a backup copy of wow folder entirely as a fallback first, but it seems a plausible and likely blizzard suggested fix for that problem.

Cheers, that's easily done, I'll give it a go :)

Well that was weird. I loaded up the game this morning to sort out the background download client and immediately received an new client. It's not the one being used on the beta realms but it's certainly working for me. I was somewhat surprised at the size of the download being sent my way though, 4.45 GB.

Yep thats a consistent size overall to what my Torrent client is reporting, in truth i committed mine to a night download for friday night when i'm out having more than a few jars, 4.odd gig is alot right now for my connection, so won't run that in the background while i'm working.

glad you've got your client sorted though.
