Only other thing I can suggest just now (as my brain is getting a bit tired which must mean its nearly home time) is an msconfig to shut down all background services and then install.

This is from the last attempt error log, Glenn, strange thing is if I run the dxwebsetup version it tells me all files are up to date or newer than the ones it's going to download.
the log file is from the full downloaded directx_jun2010_redist.exe package.
I see it becoming a choice between leaving it running on my other PC or doing a format and full reinstall on my main PC.

Essentially I think it's clearing out temp files and running dxwebsetup again, the assumption being that the web setup is not reloading files that are all ready present

1. navigate to \Windows\System32\directx\ or \Windows\SysWow64\directx
if you have vista x64.
2. Click on "organise" file menu, then "folder and search options" then
in the "View" tab check "show hidden files and folders" and then "ok"
3. websetup folder will be visible now. go in there and delete all
contents.
4. run "dxwebsetup" again. and unless your unlucky enough to have a
glitch in your download again, all should be fine.

Thanks , Steve, I've just had a look at this directory it exists but is empty, I've also done a cleanup of the drive to get rid of any temp. files etc. it's made no difference though.

If the folder is empty, either rename or remove it, then try again.

Oops did not see this part forget what I said. I did have this issue once before it was a corrupt direct x download, a few weeks later it installed fine, can you get a friend to try it out on their machine?

Did you clear or rename the temp folder mentioned in the error log?

If the folder is empty, either rename or remove it, then try again.

To uninstall Directx 11 To do this, open the Registry Editor by running Regedit from Start > Run. Next, navigate to the following registry key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DirectX. Delete this DirectX folder, exit the Registry Editor and restart your PC.

Create a restore point first or ensure you have a working WHS backup.

Well I've just tried installing the programme under diagnostic start up with only MS services running, still no go, I've also run the latest directx update package on my other win 7 machine and it runs to completion with no errors. 

Looks like my main MC needs a vanilla reinstall, something is obviously borked in the OS and is not allowing the DirectX install to complete.

Trouble is the time already spent is probably not now much different than a full install, I realise the additional software install takes most of the time but a Windows 7 install these days is in the order of 20-30 mins.

Yes, Rik, made no difference, the only way I've found on this MC to get the DirectX install to complete is by booting into safe mode, which is no help to installing the Paintshop programme as the windows installer service wont run in safe mode.

Your quite right, Steve, I've spent a fair bit of time on it over the last couple of days, I'm going to go for a fresh install. I've just found out what files I need to copy over to prevent having to re activate Windows, details available here if any one needs to reinstall Win 7.

What about chkdsc /scannow or running the Win7 DVD and looking at repair?

I've tried both, Dorset, now done a new install of the OS and Paintshop Pro has installed with no problems.

I've finally found the culprit that was causing my directx installs to fail this morning, it was the Nikon software for my DSLR.

Great.  How did you track it down, Ray?

By chance really, Rik, I had another application to install this morning that used the direcx installer as part of it's routine and it failed with the same error, as it had worked previously and I'd only installed the Nikon software after this.

I then thought it's a fair chance the Nikon software was the cause so I removed it, and tried installing the software that used the directx package again and lo and behold it worked.
