when my wife uses Word on her laptop when first opening it and going to,for example, the drop down menu to change fonts, it just hangs for a while with the 'not responding' message in the title bar. This not responding message can happen with any task, opening file, changing settings etc.

any ideas Niall?       ;)

Assuming there's a question in there relating to that ;), I'd say that it's either low amount of memory on the laptop, fragmented hard drive or in work when I see that, it's trying to access networked files from shared folders.

Try turning off the AV software, Baz.

yes there is Niall  did you not see it  :) :) ;)

just been defragged so not that, the network idea sounds a good one how do I check that

AV software Rik, what would that be checking for in Word.will there be a setting in the AV to stop it.

Niall

To be honest, I'd say that the AV is more likely to be the cause. If you've got real time scanning active, try turning that off while you try Word again. The network thing would only really be an issue if you've got Word set to check other machines on loading for files it needs. In work as, we use a network all our files are stored on profiles on the server, so it has to access that to save/update files. I'd be surprised if you're saving your documents over a network on someone elses PC. Unless you use a server of course.

just in case its a default setting how do I check for it Niall

Niall

Depending on the anti virus, under the settings page there's usually an option for it. If you can't find it, just turn the AV off completely and try that way. A bit easier :D

sorry Niall I meant word checking for other files

Niall

If you haven't set it to do it, it wont be that. By default it'll save in your "my documents" folder.

The network issue can occur if you use mapped drives (where a folder on a server is assigned a drive letter) as Windows checks the link and waits for a server response.

As has been said, AV or lack of memory (either physical or space on disk for the Virtual Memory swapfile)
