It is worrying that BT's idea of redundancy is so fragile. I hope that IDNet get compensated for this.

Will IDNET pass on any compensation? I needed to get an order in last night so resorted to tethering at an additional cost. :-\

Rik

I doubt that BT will compensate in all honesty. If they do, I would think that the compensation per user would be pennies.

Unfortunately every system and any ISP will have downtime, stuff breaks, I think if your business depends on your connectivity its a good idea to have a backup, the problem here is that it obviously took BT a long time to fix and it really shouldn't have.

I've managed to get back on ADSL but my FTTC modem refuses to sync  :dunno:

I'll get onto support.

That sounds like a very different issue, Zap. I wonder if it's finally fried itself?

I'm not sure Rik, it was connected in the early hours but only to the BT splash screen. I switched it off, went to bed and this morning it just refuses to sync.

Definitely not related to last night's fun and games then, Zap, as sync was not affected by that.

It pretty much mirrors what happened a month ago when there was a DNS issue. I had to restart the modem multiple times then before it would sync but it did eventually. Hopefully it'll do the same this time.

Very true, but it's not quite the same as someone breaking it :P

I just wonder at a system that allows an ISP to be deleted in that way.  :shake:

From the report, it sounds like there wasn't a hardware failure or even a software glitch, just someone changing a configuration. Even worse it sounds like they did the same to a backup system? I wouldn't want to speculate further than that but I'd certainly want to know exactly how this happened in writing.

esh

I assume the backup is hardware redundancy. If there is no configuration for an ISP then clearly neither the primary nor the secondary will function.

Or more like

router>en
router# config t
router(config)# interface fa0/0
router(config-if)# shutdown
Changed state to down
Trainee engineer: "oh s+#~", lets see if this works'
router(config-if)# no ip address
router(config-if)# end
Trainee engineer: 'nope that hasn't fixed it, lets see if I reconfigure the other link it might just bring this one back, errr, yeah I'll try that'
(walks over to adjacent router and repeats the above)
Trainee engineer: 'nope no idea, but I could murder a cup of tea and a bacon sandwich, maybe that'll help, I best not say a word to anyone though'

There's this guy on the periphery of my social circle. He's a nice enough bloke but is a shambles of a man who lives on his own in a barely furnished flat. He looks about 60 but is only probably in his 40's. He's some sort 90's 'E' rave scene era dropout/casualty who seems to be permanently bombed... a la Bez from the Happy Mondays. If he catches you, he witters away 99% incoherently in this sort of Stanley Unwin crossed with an Aberdeen fishwife way leaving tiny gaps for you to nod and laugh in. Despite all this, he has somehow managed to hold down a steady job for the last 20+ years... he's a BT engineer.

edit: my line is back up again too btw. :)

Maybe they look for that in interviews.

To be honest our networks guys at work often mumble incoherently but they seem to know their stuff.

Strangely a letter from BT dropped on the mat today; an introductory offer for BT broadband. Just coincidence I suppose. :dunno:

zappaDPJ

My FTTC finally managed to sync. I've also managed to connect directly via the BT modem for the first time without going through the router. Initial tests indicate a large hike in throughput.

Useful to know, Zap. Have you told support about the router?

Come on, Dave, that would imply Royal Mail could deliver letters on time. ;)

We had grounds/site service men who were a bit like that. I suppose it's part of the trade. You end up as one of the "lads".

Oh, and am I the only one pleased with the outage? I got to bed early for a change.  :D

Strangely, my ping has also halved. But it does that on occasion anyhow.
