I have a query now though, my computer is on the other side of the room so I'm connecting to the phone line via a 5 metre extension lead

Is that a flat lead or a round one?

Hi Rik,

Just seen your post, it's a flat lead, does that make a difference?

Rik

It does and a vital one. Flat leads don't use twisted pair cabling as found in standard BT phone wiring. That twisting reduces interference pickup, while the flat, non-twisted, cables act as an antenna to pick up all the noise they can find.
