Anyone using outlook 2010?

It just seems "awkward" at handling multiple email accounts - having to expand each drop down menu to get to the inbox of each email account, just to check if there is any mail there.

Everyone else getting this or just me?

Rik

I haven't evolved to 2010, Sam, I still prefer 2003 to 2007.

I use Outlook 2010, Sam, I assume you are referring to the drop down under Send/Receive Groups, I don't use use that I just hit the Send and Receive all Folders button and I've also got it set up to do a scheduled Send/receive every 30 minutes, this is the same as I've always done with 2007 and 2003 versions.

I mean the folders on the left. Each account has a expand option. You have to expand each one just to see if they have new messages in the inbox. Thunderbird handles multiple emails a lot better =/

Got 2010 for £39 being a student ;)

I'm not seeing that, Sam, I've got 6 email accounts and they all go in to one Inbox, I use POP3, you're not using MAPI by any chance are you, that could be the reason.

I do it all the time, Ray. ;D Especially as MAPI is a Windows interface for email.

It has defaulted/found the server to be IMAP..

How does that make a difference may I ask  :)

But as Ray has gone, I'll have a go!

IMAP basially syncs Outlook with what you have on the server. Therefore, it has to handle each account as a seperate inbox otherwise you'd be syncing mail from one account to the server of another account and you'd end up with a big mess!

If you set it up as pop3, you can collect mail from the server from several accounts and have it all delivered into one mailbox in Outlook.

Ah so IMAP is if I want all emails to be left on server until I delete them

POP3 will take them off the server as soon as I receive them?

Rik

Though you can opt to leave pop3 mail on the server, Sam.

mrapoc

But it will leave it on until a client without that "leave on server" setting is off

Or until an IMAP configured client syncs the server by the user deleting the mail?

Rik

Yes to the first question. As to the second, I'm not sure how mixed IMAP and POP3 would work, Sam.

I have mixed IMAP and POP accounts in Mozilla Mail, and once the mail is retrieved by the POP account, it's no longer in the IMAP accounts.  Similarly, I can 'save' emails sent from my phone (IMAP) in the PC mail client, by 'moving' the contents of the IMAP Sent folder, to the POP Sent folder, on the PC, thus, also removing sent mail from the server.

I leave POP mail on the server until it is deleted or moved from the inbox. This allows viewing by IMAP I.e iPhone. Likewise IMAP is used for viewing and deletion prior to download via POP

I only receive POP mail on one machine and the rest is IMAP

Oddly, perhaps, I find that even if I delete mail on the phone, it still seems to stay sitting on the server, as it's still there on MailWasher when I log onto the PC.  :dunno:

I thought the idea of IMAP was to keep the client and server in sync , although the deleted will remain until purged from the deleted mail box

That's the principal as I understood it, Steve, which is why it's weird that emails deleted on the phone, still pop up in MailWasher.  That said, MailWasher is checking the POP server - maybe that's the difference?

Is it on your iPhone? Mine (albeit over pop3 with leave on server enabled) has a setting to only delete from the server when it is removed from my iPhone trash folder. This itself is set to delete items over two days old. Therefore, the email wouldn't in my case be deleted from the sever until two days after I've deleted from the phone's inbox.

I'm guessing that IMAP settings may be different though.

Maybe I'm imagining things, Lance.  I'll try to double check it while I'm at work tomorrow.  Yes, the iPhone is set up for IMAP, so that I can save emails sent from the iPhone, onto the computer, by moving them from the IMAP Sent folder to the corresponding POP Sent folder, for each email account.  I have to admit, I can't see how mail that's been 'deleted' on the phone, can still appear in the POP inbox, when checked with MailWasher, but I'm sure that's what happened with the Windows Mobile phone I was using up to a few days ago, as I do get some regular, not spam, but unwanted, emails that I automatically delete on the phone, then have to delete again with MW.

Still on IMAP at the moment and the problem has come to light again

I have the inboxes for the various accounts set as favourites at the top

After send/receive I still have to click the inbox for it to show any new mail (basically it doesnt say "Inbox (5)" for 5 new emails...just "Inbox" - if i click it - then it shows "Inbox (5)")

maybe i do just need to pop3...but IMAP is great from what I can see! why is it doing this  :bawl:

Simon

Have you checked the subscriptions on all of the Inboxes?

Is IDLE enabled automatically on 2010 (sorry don't use it) otherwise you'll only see new mail when sync or open the Inbox and request information from the server

mrapoc

How would I do both of these?  ???

thanks

Steve

IDLE is part of the process on the client that tells the server it can PUSH mail to a waiting client. As I said I don't use Outlook but I would think there must be some tick boxes somewhere in the account setup to that effect.

I don't use Outlook either, sorry, but try right clicking the Inbox of each account and see if there are any sync options.
