Phone Sync Problem

I think this is a PC issue, so I'll post it here.  An Admin can move it if they like.  ;D

An 'interesting' sync problem has developed on my computer.  I usually sync two phones simultaneously with Outlook, but this evening, my iPhone 3GS was 'not recognised' by Windows XP, and no amount of changing USB socket, rebooting, disconnecting, reconnecting, seemed to help.

By chance, I swapped the USB port the iPhone is connected to, to the that my HTC HD2 was connected to, and hey presto, the iPhone synced, and all was working again.  However, when I reconnect the HD2 to any USB port, the iPhone disappears from iTunes, and when I reconnect, it's again, 'not recognised'.  How can this be?  The HTC HD2 syncs with ActiveSync, and the iPhone with iTunes.  I used to be able to have both phones connected, power up the PC, and both phones would sync without any trouble.  Anyone shed any light on this?

Sorry, Simon, it's way outside my experience, but sounds like a device conflict. With both phones connected, do you see any yellow triangles if you go into device manager?

It may be that the usb device settings need to be deleted and refreshed again.

That would be my first thought too, Steve. Just delete the usb hubs in the control panel, easier if you use a PS/2 mouse  ;)

Delete all of the USB hubs?  This is what I was thinking last night, but there seem to be no way of identifying the specific devices.   :-\

They will all be rediscovered and load the devices.

It's only the printer that slightly worries me, knowing how fickle they can be to set up sometimes.

It should be OK. E&OE. ;)

OK, I did actually find the one for Apple, and also the one for the Windows phone, so I uninstalled both of them and rebooted.  The iPhone reinstalled, and synced, but as soon as I connect the Windows phone, the iPhone disconnects from iTunes.   :bawl:

Glenn

What happens if you connect the Windows phone first?

They've got to be fighting over some common resource. Can you recall any new software, updates etc that you applied just before the problem started?

Simon

Not that I can recall.  It has worked since I jailbroke the iPhone, so I don't think it's that either.  Just going to try Glenn's idea, then will reinstall iTunes.

If I install the Windows device first, I get 'Device not recognised' when I connect the iPhone.

Is the the USB Root Hubs or the USB Host Controllers in the Device Manager I need to uninstall?

I would do the lot, but if you use a USB mouse, you delete it's driver mid operation  :D

Are they plugged into a hub or the computer, Simon. If the former, it might be worth trying the latter.

Certainly the iPhone seems a bit picky sometimes on the Mac

Both direct into the computer.

Gary

Maybe just use one phone  ;)  :out: I would go for what Steve has said, it may be an IRQ conflict if both devices are sharing the same IRQ maybe?
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

You mean, delete all the USB devices, Gary?

I would try that but I take no responsibility for what happens, google IRQ conflicts Simon, it may give you a better view of whats happening.

Sweaty palm moment... ;)

Acronis True Image is the best value single piece of software I have ever bought. Mind you, the first time you tell it to delete your entire hard drive before restore is a mega sweaty palm moment. I have done it so many times now that I have lost count. I have my OS (and programs) on a disk all on its own so I can recover with True Image, whatever horrors I have inflicted on Windows, in about five minutes.

Rik

I'm with you there, but I always seem to end up holding my breath until I've re-booted. :)
