I pay special attention to making sure all apps are closed when not in use, so it's just the browser and the push mail client, that I know of.  Not sure if jailbreaking affects the battery, but the phone is unusable without it, although, I've only done some tweaks, and haven't actually installed any apps from Cydia.  Just charged in the car for half an hour, and back up to 82%.  81...

Rik

Couldn't you leave it connected so it charges all the time you're in the car, Simon?

I could, but being stationary a lot of the time, I'm a bit worried about it killing the car battery.  I also have a bit of a thing about the cigarette lighter sockets in cars, as they always seem to get rather warm.  :-\

Rik

That's just the electronics dropping and regulating the voltage normally. If the phone charges via USB normally, the drain can't be more than 500mA, so it would take about 80 hours to flatten an average car battery.

I also have the car radio / CD on, and the taxi roof light, but thanks for the info, Rik, that's worth knowing.

So you are a Hackney driver then Simon?

I know someone who bought the HD and found it crashed all the time so is now selling it.

My Desire is sitting at 60% charge, I took it off charge on Saturday morning, that is with light use and loading 2.5Gb of Memory Map files to it.

I do use Juice Defender, it turns off unused devices, like the wireless, etc.

Oh, I have a Handsfree as well, so Bluetooth is on all the time, but wifi isn't searching, as it's only on for my home network.

Yes, Mitch.  :)

Lance

I expect it is the bluetooth draining the battery the most.

I Shall probably just go for the normal desire then for about twenty quid a month. Are the battery extend programs actually any good

pctech

3G is still a battery drain because GSM is pulsed whereas 3G (W-CDMA) is more constant.

It doesn't as such extend battery life, it just turns off unused fetures of the phone, but the end result is longer battery life.

JuiceDefender beta saves power

3dWatchdog Monitors data usage

Battery Widget Battery app

Hullomail Handy if like T-Mobile your carrier charges for voicemail

App Brain Allows you to search for apps on your PC and sync to your phone.

I wonder whether the smartphone will, in time, begin to affect fashion design - ie will designers build bigger pockets into clothes. Just my odd way of thinking...
And more polo necks.
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.

Oh, and batteries are a real problem. It's the same as miniaturisation. Fitting so much in a small place. That's why there have been incidents of explosions. Think about releasing 2 days worth of juice in one go!   :eek4:
