HTC Desire software prevents connection of any other USB device on Vista?

Trying to help a mate who has this problem on a laptop.

Desire works ok when connected but since he's installed the software it won't let him connect anything else even after a reboot or using system restore.

He's not uninstalled it yet but it sounds to me as if a detection service process keeps polling the USB root hub, thus tying up the drivers.

Can any Desire owners confirm whether it loads a system service and if so what's called so that I can see if killing the process frees up the ports?

HTC Drivers and HTC Sync might be ones to look for, Mitch. When these are installed, my iPhone won't connect, but it doesn't seem to have affected anything else.

I haven't loaded any software to connect my phone to W7, it's just seen as a removable drive once selected on the phone.

Mine doesn't load any USB drivers other than the MS ones with Win 7, the process htcUPCTLoader.exe is running all the time on my MC, this seems to start HTC.exe when you connect the phone.
I haven't experienced any problems with using other USB devices when the phone is connected though.

Perhaps nothing to do with it,but not every usb port is a separate port i.e they are shared on the same hub.

This may not be much help but I run HTC Sync on my Vista 64 machine and have had no problems. My PC still recognizes other phones and devices (USB memory stick etc). I have only recently put this on this machine and downloaded it from the HTC website (the latest version was released on 15/11/10).

Are you using the version of HTC Sync that came on the CD with the phone or have you downloaded the latest version? If not it may solve the problem.

My mate isn't using sync at all, the phone is working as a mass storage device.

I'm pretty sure I had a problem with a Desire and a Hub. It was taking too much power and took out all the other USB ports until the PC ( and Hub ) was powered off & on.

I'll ask him if he comes online later but I think he's said he tried to reboot and disconnect the cable but its had no effect.

I would suggest that he deletes all USB hubs and controllers from the Devices in Control Panel then reboot. Once the PC 'finds' the new hardware and installs the drivers, try the phone again.
