hi

I'm having some problems with our adsl connection which is driving me slowly nuts as i can't find anything concrete to blame it on, and the problem seams to fade in and out.

both myself and the folks are on idnet's business plans, with them around 200 yards further down the same line than my house.
I'd noticed that both our connections seamed to be steadily getting worse over time, and had got to the point of being borderline unusable. (i hate it when people give it as an example since its so vague, but I've been having a lot of teamspeak disconnects & game server freezeups of late)

the basic problem seams to be the connection hangs for a second or so whenever you request a new web page, and the connection speed will tail off  the connection will also occasionally die altogether (router disconnect) for up to 5 mins at a time.

at first I'd assumed it might a problem with dns, but i get the same results when using opendns or idnets automatically provisioned servers.

I've not had a lot of luck getting the official bt speed tester to run, but while its hardly proof positive, speedtest seams to sum it up fairly well.

May I suggest you try speed tests to 2 other servers?  The "Quedgley" server is clearly having problems, I am on an LLU connection and that server came up on Speedtest.net for me today, never seen it before, the pings were @1000ms and speeds at dial up according to their test which is totally wrong.

The line stats look fine, so you really need to get a BT test to find out what the profile is. If you're re-syncing, though, there's an issue with the line, your wiring or router, eg electrical noise. The other possibility is BT's 21CN upgrade, which is causing a lot of grief. Line do degrade, and with more and more people taking up ADSL, crosstalk has increased in most areas, sometimes causing connections to slow up.

You're not in Scotland, Northern Ireland or the north of England are you?

It would be helpful if you could run a tracert to www.idnet.net and post the results.

im deep in darkest devon (so no sign of snow or 21cn here)

bt speedtest finally ran
Download speedachieved during the test was - 2364 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 1200-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 832 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7150 Kbps

That is really poor for your profile and your pings look bad. I think you need to talk to support and have them check the line.

ok, thanks for your input rik, at least i know im not just imagining things now!

Compare the two, taken seconds apart, probably better to take repeated tests from one server.
