My friend is stuck at his girlfriend's on a orange bt adsl connection making gaming a lagfest until stupid off peak times.

His question is, to me, which i cannot answer (hence this post) is if he can order (and pay for) his own connection using the same line?

If not, would he have to order his own line etc. and i'm guessing this would be far from economical

Any other solutions? His girlfriend's family are tied down in an orange package and not thinking of moving :P

Feel free to move if this is more "networky" than "computery" :)

Steve

As far as I'm aware it's only one broadband provider per line

Depending on how long is left to run, it may be cheaper to pay off the Orange contract and take on a better package somewhere else.

There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Ok so would a 3g dongle be a solution? my guessing is even with a really strong hsdpa connection the ping would still be too high

Orange over subscribing by the looks

Steve

Probably cheaper to ditch the girlfriend. >:D

Two ISPs can technically be done (occasionally seen when migrating for example) but it's not something BT have chosen to support. I think Steve's onto something with his suggestion but failing that a new line is, from memory, approx £120 (from Idnet). There would then be the rental and Internet charges on top.

Best option, not to game around the GFs. :(
Else find non-ping related games.
Or find a dongle with a decent ping. Although not knowing the games, I would not know what ping to aim for.

Wait a second, we forgot the best idea! Switch to IDNET!
Orange sound dreadful. :(
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.

A friend of mine who is much more of a gamer than me also found Orange to be very slow even though he was getting 11 Megs, got him to switch away and he's well chuffed.

I wouldn't bother with the dongle as the mobile networks are overloaded, particularly in residential areas so its probably likely to run like a dog.

I know this as I support an audio conferencing system as part of my job and its hopeless on dongles.

Rik

Some say it's hopeless in any case, Mitch. ;D

Thanks. I would suppose the needs are quite similar. Although, Games dislike any slowdown/change in speed. They get real confused. You could probably play with a constant 800ms ping if it was always the case. Well, we did do it on 512k, which usually delivered 240k. :P
