D-Link router tracks Wi-Fi gadgets around the house

D-Link is launching a new series of wireless routers that locate Wi-Fi gadgets in the home and concentrate the signal towards them.

The so-called SmartBeam technology has previously been used in business routers, but this is the first time it has been deployed in consumer products, according to D-Link. It is designed for use in large houses that suffer from Wi-Fi deadspots or faltering signal in rooms furthest from the access point.

The D-Link Wi-Fi Booster with SmartBeam Technology includes six directional antennae. The device surveys the area for wireless devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablets and then assigns one of the antennae to focus signal in the direction of the device. A set of LEDs mounted on the top of the circular Booster reveal the direction the antennae are pointing towards.
