Been there - read the book: didn't like the ending!

Most of us cannot live with a router and phone plugged in the BT Test Socket so I would suggest that you fit something like the ADSL Nation filtered faceplate (which is cheaper than lots of separate ADSL filters) This gave me an immediate increase in connection rate of 3Mbps (still some 5 to 8Mbps) below most ADSL2+ speed estimators for my line attenuation of 15. Synch rose from 7150 to 10000 after about 36 hours, then fell again back to 8000 following a series of de-synchronizations but - after 2 months of ADSL2+ -  the router has finally stayed connected for 6 days and IP is back at 10000. Clearly, BT's infrastructure is in as bad a state of repair as most of our roads.

Just to say that on my ADSL2+ line with very similar downstream attenuation as you, I achieve a sync at around 14-15MB and SNR at 6 (on a DG834 v4)... As others have said it's that downstream SNR that is the problem.

Thanks everyone for your replies, advice, and suggestions.  If nothing else I've learnt something.  Will look into the filtered faceplate as it seems a sensible idea.

A Happy ending!  Brian at Idnet asked BT to restart my line training period.  Nothing happened for about a week. Then the line was restarted, presumably by BT at 9pm. The noise went down from 30db to 15db.  Speed up to 8 meg.  A few days later and another restart Noise down to 12db and speed 9 meg.    This weekend I decided to replace the filters with the ADSL nation face-plate I purchased as suggested on this thread.   Speed up to 10 meg - noise still 12 db.    Well pleased - double the speed at the same cost - works for me.  Thanks everybody.

Now all you need is some road surfacing near to your home/cabinet and you might get another 0.5Mbps increase
