Hi,

New poster here, have lurked on and off for years, but have just had FTTC installed, (first in our cab), and would like a little advice over speeds.

BT guy came this morning, and to be honest he was excellent. Had everything up and running in no time. He tested the speed to the BT modem at 39Mb/s.

I've connected and I'm getting around 14/15. Now admittedly this is a vast improvement on the around 6 I was getting, but I can't help but be slightly disappointed. I was expecting, and looking at other posts, was right to expect more like 30+ Mb/s.

I rang Idnet this morning and they said that things would need time to "settle down" - this felt a bit like a fob off, and there has been no substantial difference during the day.

One other thing that feels relevant is that upload speeds are around 8Mb/s - which is where I would expect, and if, proportionally, I was getting similar download speeds, I'd be more than happy.

Anyhelp much appreciated. Thanks in advance,
J.

What's your current IP Profile?

What are you basing your speeds on?

Can you run the standard BT Performance test:

http://speedtest.btcentralplus.com/   or   http://test.speedtester.bt.com/

Provided the problems have been resolved.  That will show your profile and a fairly accurate speed.

If the Engineer tested at 39 then I would suggest you should be seeing nearer to 32 or 34  and certainly above 30.

They're not fobbing you off. BT expect the line to fluctuate for a while, so will not accept speed issues for the first 10 days.

Which router do you use with the vdsl modem?

Hi everyone, thanks for all the speedy replys. Did the BT speedtest last night and again this morning with similar results although slower this morning speedtest.net and speed.io are still fairly consistent:

1. Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Download Speed: 10867 Kbps | Max Achievable Speed: 38717 Kbps

> Download speed achieved during the test was - 10867 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 16000-38717 Kbps .

Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is -38717 Kbps

2. Upstream Test: -provides background information.
Upload Speed: 7881 Kbps | Max Achievable Speed: 10000 Kbps

>Upload speed achieved during the test was - 7881 Kbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 10000 Kbps

This test was not conclusive and further testing is required. This might be useful for your ISP to investigate the fault.

Your line is configured to the maximum rate that it can support or at your chosen fixed rate, this is known as the line rate and would be viewed through your CPE software or in your router configuration.

I've tested the speed of the line on both speedtest.net and speed.io and got consistent results somewere between 12-14Mb/s.

Router: Buffalo wireless-n nfiniti WZR2-G300N.

Thanks again everyone.

Oh, and I was about to do the BT tap test, but my wife is working from home and I got a bit of a talking to when her connection to her server at work dropped - a-hem.

Will do this afternoon and report back.

The profile is fine, so that suggests a congestion issue. Have a word with support.

There is something amiss - even if it will take time to settle down with a 38717 profile I would have expected the BT test to have given speeds over 20Mbps.

I am always sceptical of the speedtest.net and speed.io testers - on my old connection which at the time was 2Mbps speedtest.net could report 10 or 12 and then with a 6Mbps ADSL2+ it would report 40 or 50 ...     Speed.io this morning gave a 15Mbps reading but the actual graphs showing throughput, task manager and tbbmeter indicated a continuous download of around 36Mbps.

Next time you run any of the tests open Task Manager (or the current variant) and select the Networking tab.  Then watch the data download profile and do a little maths to get an approximate rate - does it match (or close to) the tester results?

Ok... hangs head in shame, let's see if I can spare anyone else's blushes.

Always do your speedtest with a wired connection when possible - whatever you, don't ever, ever do them with a laptop using the inbuilt wireless adapter, and assume that you'd get the same throughput that you'd get from a wired connection.

The wired connection hit 35Mb/s. The wireless adapter that I've now attached to my main PC, that is fully compatible with the router is hitting around 20Mb/s. Not brilliant, but at least I know why and what I can do about it. And to be honest I was intending to have a dedicated computer for downloading sat next to the router anyway. So... I may just go and spend a few bob on some network cable to push the higher speeds into the office.

Sorry for wasting people's time. Thanks for all your help!

J.

I was just reading through and about to ask whether it was a wireless or cable connection!

At least you've discovered the wireless LAN throughout,

Ok - just to report back.

£10 on 15 metres of network cable. An old router out of the cupboard, bit of tinkering with a few network settings, and I am an extremely happy man.

Thanks everyone.
