My connection has been turning to sludge again lately (well it has been stable for a couple of months now so it's due to do a fubar), web pages can take forever to open... if at all. I'm off work so thought I'd check out some playstation - which would be nice if only it could stay connected for more than a few minutes at a time.

So I thought I'd see what my thinkbroadband monitor had to say about it. :eek4:

What does this signify?

My exchange is Aberdeen Balgownie NSBLG and my BT 2700 HGV is always connected directly to my master socket.

It looks like exchange congestion, but do you have any background downloads running after midnight?

I was about to say just that, A Picasso has just sold for several million, frame that and you'll be rich for life .

Looking again, those high average pings are what I used to get here evry now and again,BT always swore there was no issue but the truth was the duct had collapsed in the pavement, was full of water and had knackered the cables.

Lance

That signifies that your ping is massive, almost as if the line is being satuated from constant downloading and uploading. Might be worth checking the router to make sure there are no unknown devices connected via wireless.

Hi Rik.
Yes I did try to d/l something but I quit it as it was going to take days to come in.
Rich.

Your minimum ping is quite high too, have you tried rebooting the router?

Rik

Are you on a wired or wireless connection, Rich? I think it would be worth re-booting the router, as Dorset suggests, to see if that clears anything.

As far as my limited ability can ascertain I have 5 devices connected - 2 PC's, 2 phones (me and the Mrs) and an undefined device which I presume is the playstation.
My ping is always around 40.

I think there is a lot of noise there but also Lance could well be right, that looks like constant high level traffic.

Look at my graphs on LLU first is during the week, second is when my lad is home and 2 machines are running, he is always streaming video and dowloading.

Everything has turned to stone again (gave up trying to reply to an earlier post).
I'll give a reboot a try. See you guys at the other end.... hopefully. ;D

How long has this been going on for?

BT have had a 21CN incident report open since the 5th Feb for Glasgow, could be affecting you?

Yep, the 5th sounds about right.
But I'm east coast and G/gow is west coast. Would that matter?

Your ping is all over the place from here, so I asked support to take a look. They are seeing the same. During the offpeak hours, though, your were downloading 3.4GB, so your 4.5M profile was pretty much maxed out. In those circumstances the ping times mean nothing. If you don't think you're using that bandwidth, you need to check your router security.

You should be fed through Edinburgh, but BT does some odd things with routing.

You're not kidding- they're still messing about with mine. BQM goes from dead flat to something 'orrible in a matter of minutes
Though it's nowhere near as bad as Rich's, that's truly a nightmare :eek4:

I was getting pings go from 13ms up to 1400+ms here on and off for months , BT ............ nothing wrong. :slap:

Bill

Mine's never been that bad, in fact most people would probably be quite happy with it even on its worst days.

It's just that up to less than a month ago it was excellent, then something changed >:(

Perhaps setting up some QOS (Quality of service) options for the PCs/PS3 connected to the router would help? Then if the children, wife, or any other family member decides to watch Dr Who in HD over BBC Iplayer, your connection will not nose dive. This usually happens because a download will attempt to max out your connection, delivering the file or video in the quickest time. This prevents you from getting out ping requests, website requests or PS3/PC gaming. It can sometimes work when your on one pc. But with multiple computers connected, they tend to compete against each other, rather than work together. :(

Not sure how you would set it up though, as I have never used it. But giving the PS3 maximum priority would help, as it's not likely to max out the download (unless patching or watching video) but will need it's info quicker than those using a pc to browse webpages.
I use to have a signature, then it all changed to chip and pin.

Maxing out the connection then as I suspected. Just need to work out what device is doing it!

Well I switched it off for a while. It doesn't feel any different.

This is with only slight activity (web surfing) from my pc only, everything else off.
