I can well believe a good majority of the cab drivers I meet would probably do this if the opportunity presented itself.

It sounds like the lad was as absent-minded as a newt, Mitch. ;)

A cab driver has every right to refuse to take a passenger who does not have the means to pay the fare.  If he chooses to take the passenger on trust, he has every right to ask for some security until the fare is paid.  We don't know the full story here, but most cabbies, in my experience, are honest and trustworthy.  They are also licenced and CRB checked by the local authority.  Of course, unlicensed mini cabs are a different story...

And I'd bet that this was one of those, Simon.

Mitch, perhaps you need to find a more trustworthy taxi firm?

I made quite a sweeping statement there, there are some terrific drivers that are really nice people and are a pleasure to deal with but unfortunately the popotion of these is decreasing and that is the case across all firms in MK (I've tried them all at some point)

Simon

Stick to the local authority licenced firms, Mitch, then if you have any complaints, you can raise these with the relevant licensing authority.

I've been in mini buses where the driver had trouble finding which seat was his, and where the road was.

However, most of the cabs I've been in (and only a few mind you) have been nice and friendly and helpful. My bro also use to get taxis to college. He said some were ok, other were not. So a bit like life, a box of chocolates and all that.

All the cabs I have been in that I can remember have been okay people, and wiling to help, I always tip them and if they have picked up things like TV's etc I have given them extra to move it for me as I can't. Now try getting cab in Hungary...there is a reason they are called hyenas if you don't have a local who speaks the language and they know you are a tourist.
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

For a moment I thought you said bladders, Steve. Now you know why I had my eyes tested this morning. ;D

I find it hard to believe that any licensed cab driver would risk his licence, livelihood and liberty for an iPhone. He must have been unlicensed.
