When going to torrents (any) I am getting the following message when attempting a d/l

Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file.  You may not have the approriate permissions to access the item.

This seems to ring a bell but I can't remember what to do (old age creeps on).

Pls help.

Oops   .... sorted.

B****y Zone Alarm Pro again. This really is an awful programme. Tempted sometimes to just run without it and let the router handle all the flak.

I dumped it ages ago, I now use (free) Comodo, as well as my router, no probs at all.

I gave up on ZA Pro ages ago as it was more trouble than it was worth worth.  The free version is just excellent as a software firewall, but it still has major problems with torrents and port-forwarding.

Thinking about using Kerio/Sunbelt free firewall but haven't read enough about how it interacts with torrents.  I do know that it's an excellent firewall under normal circumstances though.

What's this programme like?  And more importantly, will it work with Vista??

I use ZA on my XP systems, but its not yet compatible with Vista, so have been on the look out for something other than just the Mcaffee that came installed with the machine.

So far the Macaffee is working ok, but I prefer having another anti-virus/spyware etc etc working in the background too just in case there's something that one misses.

Hi Myd

While it's OK to run two, or more, anti-spyware packages, the same is not true of realtime anti-virus software, they will generally clash and crash.

For AV, imo, you can't do better than NOD32, which catches a few more things besides.

The programme is fine, far more straightforward than ZA.  not sure about Vista, I am avoiding it like the plague for at least a year. :D

To judge by the website, Inactive, it doesn't support Vista. :(

No surprise there Rik, they are not alone in not supporting Vista.

Personally I reckon Vista is a bit of a stop gap measure, like Windows 2000, and the industry are not bothering too much with it.

I agree with your feeling, but I'd say it was more like Me than 2000. Something pushed out without many of the promised features in order to please shareholders.

If you wait for "the next version" of windows in the hope that it will just run everything on everything then I think you will be very disappointed. If things don't work with Vista then there isn't a hope in hell that they will work with whatever comes next.

I appreciate that Vista isn't for everyone but constantly reading posts just saying "I'm not going to use it" is somewhat tiring. Can we just take it for read now.

I don't recall anyone saying that they were " not going to use it " Rob, just giving an opinion on it,  that's all.

That is what forums are all about, after all is said and done.

Back to the original topic/solution...

Personally, I only use the XP firewall, along with my router. I've not had a problem with this to date.

Whilst true Rob, by the time the next version of Windows comes out (anticipated in a relatively short timescale), the hardware/software people are currently using happily under XP will be starting to age and become obsolete. With this in mind, things not working with the new release may be less of a barrier as users may be more inclined, and find it easier to justify, the purchase of new compatible hardware/software.

ok, back on topic, Comodo have announced Vista support as of version 3 of their firewall (pro) product. This is apparently starting it's beta phase next week. I think it's fair to assume that once that has been released the free version, supporting Vista, will be released.
